CATHARINE BELL on THE EUGENE FIELD MEMORIAL (DREAM LADY) Installed 1922
    Created by Edward McCartan
Located in Lincoln Park Zoo, northeast of the Primate House
I originally came across the "Dream Lady" in 1988, on my first day on the job as photographer and writer at Lincoln Park Zoo. Assigned to "wander around zoo grounds and find an interesting story," I had many choices from among the more than 1,500 animals. But I ended up with an unexpected subject. Just outside the northeast corner of the zoo's Primate House, I came upon and angel, graceful and tall in a flowing robe. With wings tucked behind her and arms gently reaching down toward two children asleep at her feet, she appeared to have momentarily alighted from above. It was hard to believe that this delicate creature and tender moment were entirely sculpted in bronze. How sculptor Edward McCarten carved such charm out of metal may be a tribute to the man whose childrens' poems and lullabies inspired the Dream Lady, Eugene Field (1850-1895). Field's poetry was immensely popular with both the children and parents of his time. "The Rock-a-by Lady," one of his most-beloved works, is portrayed here by the Dream Lady herself, while "Wynken, Blynken and Nod," and "The Sugar Plum Tree," two other favorites, are illustrated on carved relief panels which decorate the front of the sculpture's rectangular granite base.

    THE HOLY GRAIL
The Holy Grail is generally considered to be the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and the one used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch his blood as he hung on the cross. This significance, however, was introduced into the Arthurian legends by Robert de Boron in his verse romance Joseph d'Arimathie (sometimes also called Le Roman de l'Estoire dou Graal ), which was probably written in the last decade of the twelfth century or the first couple of years of the thirteenth. In earlier sources and in some later ones, the grail is something very different. The term "grail" comes from the Latin gradale Parzival Perceval Morte d'Arthur ) do achieve the quest. Tennyson is perhaps the author who has the greatest influence on the conception of the Grail quest for the modern English-speaking world through his Idylls and his short poem "Sir Galahad" . However, James Russell Lowell's "The Vision of Sir Launfal" , one of the most popular of nineteenth-century American poems gave to generations a democratized notion of the Grail quest as something achievable by anyone who is truly charitable. The notion that the Grail story originated in fertility myths was popularized by Jessie Weston in her book From Ritual to Romance , which was used by T. S. Eliot in the writing of

    DENVER'S LITERARY LANDMARKS DRIVING TOUR
    STOP 1: WASHINGTON PARK
(Franklin and Exposition Streets, East Side of Park)
    Eugene Field: The Unforgettable Trickster
For generations now, tiny Coloradans have been prodded, poked and made to stand still while having their photograph taken with obscure, out-of-state relatives next to the statue of Wynken, Blynken and Nod in a picturesque spot next to the Eugene Field House on the east side of Washington Park. There are worse things to happen in childhood, so if you're kind enough to begin this Denver Lit Tour with us at this recommended first stop, then by all means force your children to lean into your viewfinder for a lovely shot of the statue (sculpted by Mabel Landrum Torrey in 1919) with Washington Park lake - and the Rocky Mountains - in the background. It doesn't matter that the only connection between Eugene Field (1850-1895) and Washington Park is that he once nearly drowned in it while goofing around with friends. What does matter is that this city - and an entire generation of American parents and children - adored this man and his writings. Just as nearly every American child today has a Dr. Seuss book read to him or her, Eugene Field's poems for children were equally beloved and best-selling in the first decades of the last century. Beside "Dutch Lullaby," the poem honored by the sculpture, children everywhere once knew "The Sugar Plum Tree," "The Duel" (between the Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat), and "Little Boy Blue."

    FIELD, EUGENE
FIELD, EUGENE (1850—1895), American poet, was born at St Louis, Missouri, on the 2nd of September 1850. He spent his boyhood in. Vermont and Massachusetts; studied for short periods at Williams and Knox Colleges and the University of Missouri, but without taking a degree; and worked as a journalist on various papers, finally becoming connected with the Chicago News. A Little Book of Profitable Tales appeared in Chicago in 1889 and in New York the next year; but Field’s place in later American literature chiefly depends upon his poems of Christmas-time and childhood (of which “Little Boy Blue” and “A Dutch Lullaby” are most widely known), because of their union of obvious sentiment with fluent lyrical form. His principal collections of poems are: A Little Book of Western Verse (1889); A Second Book of Verse (1892); With Trumpet and Drum (1892); and Love Songs of Childhood (1894). Field died at Chicago on the 4th of November 1895. His works were collected in’ ~en volumes (1896), at ‘New York. His prose Love-affairs of a Bibliornaniac (1896) contains a Memoir by his brother Roswell Martin Field (b. 1851). See also Slason

Eugene Field was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850, educated in Monson and Williamstown, Mass., at Knox College (Galesburg, Illinois), and at the University of Missouri. His career in journalism saw him write for newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, and finallyfrom 1883 until his death in 1895Chicago, where he authored a column called "Sharps and Flats" for The Chicago Daily News. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock in 1873 and they had eight children. His volumes of poetry, including A Little Book of Western Verse (1889) and Love Songs of Childhood (1894), made him famous through the United States as a humourist and poet of children, although he also wrote (and published surreptiously) bawdy poems for men's clubs. Biographies of Field are by Slason Thomson, Life of Eugene Field: The Poet of Childhood (New York: Appleton, 1927), and Robert Conrow, Field Days: The Life, Times, and Reputation of Eugene Field (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1974). Eugene Field wrote Little Boy Blue upon the death of his son; that is what the line "an angel song awakened our Little Boy Blue" refers to.
