FIELD, DAVID DUDLEY
FIELD, DAVID DUDLEY (1805—1894), American lawyer and law reformer, was born in Haddam, Connecticut, on the 13th of February 1805. He was the oldest of the four sons of the Rev. Dtfvid Dudley Field (1781—1867), a well-known American clergyman and author; He graduated at Williams College in 1825, and settled in New York City, where he studied law, was 8dmitted to the bar in 1828, and rapidly won a high position in his profession. Becoming convinced that the common law in America, and particularly in New York state, needed radical changes in respect to the unification and simplification of its procedure, he visited Europe in 1836 and thoroughly investigated the courts, procedure and codes of England, France and other countries, and then applied himself to the task of bringing about in the United States a codification of the common law procedure. For more than forty years every momen.t that he could spare from his extensive practic~ was devoted to this end. He entered upon his great work by a systematic publication of pamphlets and articles in journals and magazines in behalf of his reform, but for some years he met with a discouraging lack of interest. He appeared personally before successive legislative committees, and Part of his numerous pamphlets and addresses were collected in his Speeches, Arguments and Miscellaneous Papers (3 vols., 1884— 1890). Intro Cub Pilot ... Glossary FAREWELL - 1902 The Eugene Field Memorial Tablet In June 1902 Clemens paid his final visit to the Mississippi River when he accepted an honorary degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia and helped dedicate a steamboat named in his honor. After he made a speech at the dedication of the steamboat MARK TWAIN , he later attended an unveiling for a memorial marker to writer Eugene Field. The dedication was reported in the St. Louis Globe Democrat on June 7, 1902.

Birthplace Memorial Unveiled by Mark Twain
MARK TWAIN UNVEILING THE MEMORIAL TABLET IN THE WALL OF THE HOUSE WHERE EUGENE FIELD WAS BORN.
A great living Missourian paid a tribute to a sweet singer of Missouri when Mark Twain, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, unveiled a bronze tablet to the memory of Eugene Field at the house on South Broadway where the poet was born. The ceremony was simple, but impressive, and necessarily. It is expected that the tablet and house will be an objective point for visitors in the city for many years to come. Immediately on landing from the river trip of the French visitors, the entire party took carriages for 634 South Broadway, the birthplace of Eugene Field. A flag hung listlessly in front of the house, a dingy three-story brick, hiding the tablet which friends of the poet have had erected. Stepping to the front of the party, Mr. Clemens took off his hat and spoke as follows:

When I demanded of my friend what viands he preferred, He quoth, "A large cold bottle, and a small hot bird!" The Bottle and the Bird Eating How gracious those dews of solace that over my senses fall At the clink of the ice in the pitcher the boy brings up the hall. The Duel
by Eugene Field (1850–1895)
The gingham dog and the calico cat
Side by side on the table sat;
'T was half-past twelve, and (what do you think!)
Nor one nor t' other had slept a wink!
The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate
Appeared to know as sure as fate
There was going to be a terrible spat.
I was n't there; I simply state
What was told to me by the Chinese plate!
The gingham dog went "bow-wow-wow!"
And the calico cat replied "mee-ow!" The air was littered, an hour or so, With bits of gingham and calico, While the old Dutch clock in the chimney-place Up with its hands before its face, For it always dreaded a family row! Never mind: I 'm only telling you What the old Dutch clock declares is true! The Chinese plate looked very blue, And wailed, "Oh, dear! what shall we do!" But the gingham dog and the calico cat Wallowed this way and tumbled that, Employing every tooth and claw In the awfullest way you ever saw— And, oh! how the gingham and calico flew! Don't fancy I exaggerate— I got my news from the Chinese plate!
