John Fiske (1842-1901)
Berman, Milton. John Fiske. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1961.  As John Higham points out, "Whenever possible [the] author puts an ungenerous construction on Fiske's intellectual performance." (New England Quarterly 351962:556) Despite the bias, the work is credible, with an excellent bibliographical essay. Based on a Harvard dissertation. Clark, John Spencer, ed. The Life and Letters of John Fiske. 2 vols. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1917. About 100 pages on Fiske's life in Middletown, where he grew up, until he went off to Harvard in 1860. A Spencerian interpretation of America's leading popularizer of Spencerian thinking. Index. No citations, but a thoroughly scholarly study nonetheless. Forty illustrations. Commager, Henry Steele. "John Fiske." Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society 66(1942). Probably the most insightful piece on Fiske. Commager is a distinguished historian. Fiske, E. F., ed.

Pop. (19oI) 2002. Its railway station, which is the chief terminus of the South Wales system of the Great Western railway, is at the hamlet of Goodwick across the bay, a mile distant to the south-west. Fishguard Bay is deep and well sheltered from all winds save those of the N. and N.E., and its immense commercial value has long been recognized. After many years of labour and at a great expenditure of money the Great Western railway has constructed a fine breakwater and railway pier at Goodwick across the lower end of the bay, and an important passenger and goods traffic with Rosslare on the opposite Irish coast was inaugurated in 1906. FISK, JAMES (1834—1872), American financier, was born at Bennington, Vermont, on the 1st of April 1834. After a brief period in school he ran away and joined a circus. Later he became a hotel waiter, and finally adopted the business of his father, a pedlar. He then became a salesman for a Boston dry goods firm, his aptitude and energy eventually winning for him a share in the business. By his shrewd dealing in army contracts during the Civil War, and it is said by engaging in cotton smuggling

- Erwin Gudde, California Place Names "FISKE, John (1842-1901), American philosopher and historian, whose writings on philosophy were responsible for spreading in the U.S. the ideas of the British social philosopher Herbert Spencer and the originator of the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin . Originally named Edmund Fisk Green, he was born in Hartford, Conn., and educated at Harvard University. In 1864 he was admitted to the bar, but soon gave up his legal pursuits and began writing for periodicals. In 1869 he gave a series of lectures on positivism at Harvard and the following year he was appointed history tutor at the university. Two years afterward he became assistant librarian, a post he held until 1879. In 1881 he was named to a lectureship at Washington University, Saint Louis, Mo., becoming nonresident professor of American history in 1884. Fiske claimed as his contribution to the doctrine of evolution his detection of the part played by the longer period of infancy in human beings than in animals. His works include Darwinism and Other Essays (1879), Excursions of an Evolutionist (1884), The Destiny of Man Viewed in the Light of His Origin (1884), and The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge (1885).

Fiske, John 1842-1901, American philosopher and historian, b. Hartford, Conn. Born Edmund Fisk Green, he changed his name in 1855 to John Fisk, adding the final e in 1860. He opened a law practice in Boston but soon turned to writing. A wide reader, he had been an enthusiastic follower of Herbert Spencer while in college, and the first part of his life was given mainly to popularizing Spencerian evolution. He tried to reconcile orthodox religious beliefs with science, both on the lecture platform and in such books as Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy (1874, repr. 1969), Darwinism and Other Essays (1879, repr. 1913), Excursions of an Evolutionist The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge (1886), and Through Nature to God (1899). Early in his career Fiske also achieved popularity as a lecturer on history and in his later life was occupied mostly with that field. His historical writings include The Critical Period of American History, 1783-1789
