The roots of Prehistoric Fiction
"Until the 19th century, man's first appearance on earth was treated on a historical basis as a matter of record... On the whole, the scheme of Archbishop Usher, who computed that the earth and man were created in 4004 BC, was the most popular... However... the first appearance of man ... is positively so remote, that an estimate between twenty and a hundred thousand years may fairly be taken as a minimum." So states the Encyclopedia Britannica article on Anthropology in the 11th (1910) edition, some fifty years after the publication of Darwin's

Anonymous
(From: Investigator 33, 1993 November) SUMMARY Social/political arguments of Malthus were adapted to biology (Natural Selection) by Darwin and reconverted back to politics by Social Darwinists. The ideas of Social Darwinists in turn became justifications for war, racism, exploitation, oppressive laws, eugenics and prejudice. Many mistakes and consequences of Social Darwinism were contrary to the Christian Scriptures. This suggests possible relationships between scientific theory, ethics and theology so that one discipline could assist another in the formulating of accurate conclusions or at least of hypotheses not so soon falsified.
INTRODUCTION The following discussion shows how a political argument by Malthus was converted to biology by Darwin and how Darwinism in turn was converted back to politics in Social Darwinism which in turn provided a justification for racism, exploitation and oppression.
DARWINISM "Darwinism" is the theory of the "Origin of Species" formulated by British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882). The basis of Darwinism is that new species evolve from older species by means of "Natural Selection". The elements of Natural Selection are: Individuals in natural populations vary in characteristics;

PART 1-THE BIBLE DOCTRINE OF SIN
By C.D.Cole
CHAPTER 1-THE NATURE OF SIN Sin is a patent fact—its reality does not need to be argued. Sin is a fact of experience, of observation, and of revelation. Sin is something I feel in my own heart; it is something I see in others, even in my best friends and loved ones; and it is something revealed in the Bible. The policeman pursues it, the physician prescribes for it, the law discovers it, conscience condemns it, God controls and punishes it, and yet nobody likes to own it. But as a matter of fact, sin is all that anyone owns; he is a steward of everything else he may possess. Obvious as sin is, there is a proneness to treat it like some folks treat their trashy relatives; it is ignored and even denied. Sin may be defined but it cannot be explained. To explain sin is to explain it away. How sin got started in the universe is a profound mystery. It had no place in the original creation, which God pronounced good. Sin is a parasite, an interloper, an outlaw cell in the moral system, and a terrible monstrosity. Sin made its appearance on earth in a garden of delights, after it had defiled the heavens, and turned this fair earth into a wilderness of woe. In the original creation we read only of heaven and earth, but later we are told of everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Sin is a cheat, a deceiver, and a destroyer. It promises pleasure and pays off in pain. It promises life and pays off in death. It promises profit and pays off in poverty—the loss of all good. Every sin is committed for profit. Nobody would sin if he did not think it would profit in some form or other. There is profit in sin

CHAPTER 18 William James and G. Stanley Hall: THE FOUNDING OF SCIENTIFIC PSYCHOLOGY IN THE UNITED STATES It is always dangerous to talk of founders. It is the oversimplification of the great man theory of history. American scientific psychology came about in the way it did through the actions of numerous people in their individual and institutional capacities. Still, it is worthwhile to consider in some detail a few of the major figures about whom much of this activity centered. William James (1842-1910) and Granville Stanley Hall (1844-1924) were two such figures. One could hardly find two more different individuals. William James was a mercurial individual, defying labeling. He was as organizationally naive as he was interpersonally magnetic. He was constantly looking for the possibilities in things and constantly being disappointed at the realities behind those possibilities. He was a man of great ideas, although often uninterested as to how those ideas related one to another. James founded no system of psychology although his ideas influenced the systems that were established during his lifetime. He drew his inspiration not from one individual or even from one movement, but from a combination of sources, and in a fashion that made it self-initiated.

Born Edmund Fisk Green, he changed his name in 1855 to John Fisk, adding the final e in 1860. He opened a law practice in Boston but soon turned to writing. A wide reader, he had been an enthusiastic follower of Herbert Spencer while in college, and the first part of his life was given mainly to popularizing Spencerian evolution. He tried to reconcile orthodox religious beliefs with science, both on the lecture platform and in such books as Outlines of Cosmic Philosophy (1874, repr. 1969)
