Arthur Mizener Papers on F. Scott Fitzgerald
Introduction The Arthur Mizener Papers on F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) consists primarily of Mizener's working papers used in preparation of his biography of Fitzgerald, The Far Side of Paradise (1951). Credited with renewing interest in its subject, the profile was the first account of Fitzgerald's life to be published. Mizener (1907- 1988) subsequently published three more books on Fitzgerald. Also present are manuscripts for essays, reviews and addresses about Fitzgerald and his times. Mizener donated most of his working papers in 1984, and additional papers were purchased in 1986. Mizener corresponded with friends, relatives, and associates of Fitzgerald requesting personal reminiscences and permission to quote from their letters to Fitzgerald. Biographical Sketch Arthur Mizener (1907-1988), educator, editor, and author, graduated from Princeton University in 1930, earned a masters at Harvard University, and returned to Princeton to receive his doctorate in 1934. Mizener taught English at Yale University, Wells College, and Carleton College before becoming Cornell University's Mellon Foundation Professor of English in 1951. He retired from teaching in 1975. Mizener's works include the first biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald

His best-known novel, The Great Gatsby, made him an instant success and subjected both Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, to intense publicity. Much of that attention was negative, dwelling on Fitzgerald's battles with alcohol and Zelda's mental breakdown. It is evident in this letter, written just before their marriage, the extent of their devotion to each other. Zelda Fitzgerald To F. Scott Fitzgerald
Spring 1919 Sweetheart, Please, please don't be so depressed We'll be married soon, and then these lonesome nights will be over forever and until we are, I am loving, loving every tiny minute of the day and night Maybe you won't understand this, but sometimes when I miss you most, it's hardest to write and you always know when I make myself Just the ache of it all and I can't tell you. If we were together, you'd feel how strong it is you're so sweet when you're melancholy. I love your sad tenderness when I've hurt you That's one of the reasons I could never be sorry for our quarrels and they bothered you so Those dear, dear little fusses, when I always tried so hard to make you kiss and forget
