Rioupéroux
HIGH and solemn mountains guard Rioupéroux
Frail as wood anemones, white and frail were you,
And drooping a little, like the slender daffodil. O I will go to France again, and tramp the valley through,
And I will change these gentle clothes for clog and corduroy,
And work with the mill-hands of black Rioupéroux,
And walk with you, and talk with you, like any other boy.
HOW splendid in the morning glows
the lily; with what grace he throws
His supplication to the rose:
do roses nod the head, Yasmin?
But when the silver dove descends
I find the little flower of friends Whose very name that sweetly ends The morning light is clear and cold, I dare not in that light behold A deeper light, a deeper gold a glory too far shed, Yasmin. But when the deep red eye of day is level with the lone highway, And some to Mecca turn to pray, and I toward thy bed, Yasmin, Or when the wind beneath the moon is drifting like a soul aswoon

To a Poet a Thousand Years Hence I who am dead a thousand years,
And wrote this sweet archaic song,
Send you my words for messengers
The way I shall not pass along.
I care not if you bridge the seas,
Or ride secure in the cruel sky,
Or build consummate palaces
Of metal or of masonry.
But have you wine and music still,
And statues and a bright-eyed love,
And foolish thoughts of good and ill, And prayers to them who sit above? How shall we conquer? Like a wind That falls at eve our fancies blow, And old Maeonides the blind Said it three thousand years ago, O friend unseen, unborn, unknown, Student of our sweet Engligh tongue, Read out my words at night, alone: I was a poet, I was young. Since I can never see your face, And never shake you by the hand, I send my soul through time and space To greet you. You will understand.

    Local history
    Lewisham

The parish of Lewisham included Hither Green, Sydenham, Catford and Forest Hill, but the village of Lewisham stretched along Lewisham High Street from the present railway station to the ancient parish church of St Mary. King James I, impressed with the length of the High Street, remarked "On my soul, I will be king of Lusen". This spelling suggests that the name was then pronounced Loos-am, whereas now it is Loo-ish-am. The name derives from Old English 'ham', a village, and the name of a person, probably Leof or Leofsa - Leofsa's village. In the Middle Ages the manor of Lewisham belonged to the Abbey of Ghent. It used to be thought that King Alfred's daughter had granted it to them, but the document saying this is now known to be a forgery. At the time of the Doomsday Book (1086) there were eleven mills along the River Ravensbourne. Before the Industrial Revolution these mills were used for grinding steel for weapons and for tanning leather, as well as for grinding corn.
