The Old Ships
I have seen old ships sail like swans asleep
Beyond the village which men still call Tyre,
With leaden age o'ercargoed, dipping deep
For Famagusta and the hidden sun
That rings black Cyprus with a lake of fire;
And all those ships were certainly so old
Who knows how oft with squat and noisy gun,
Questing brown slaves or Syrian oranges,
The pirate Genoese
Hell-raked them till they rolled Blood, water, fruit and corpses up the hold. But now through friendly seas they softly run, Painted the mid-sea blue or shore-sea green, Still patterned with the vine and grapes in gold. But I have seen, Pointing her shapely shadows from the dawn And image tumbled on a rose-swept bay, A drowsy ship of some yet older day; And, wonder's breath indrawn, Thought Iwho knowswho knowsbut in that same (Fished up beyond Aeaea, patched up new Stern painted brighter blue) That talkative, bald-headed seaman came

That's one of the things I look forward to about an evening like this - someone to drink tea with at the end of it. For all I know, the whole point of civilisation is to provide one with someone to drink tea with at the end of an evening.
Aurora Greenway, Terms of Endearment , Larry McMurtry (Submitted by Carla Travis, 17-Jul-00) At four, to the Rangers' astonishment, the party stopped so that tea could be served. A small table was set up, covered with a white damask cloth. A fire was made; while Emerald sliced a small ham, and made little sandwiches, Mrs. Chubb brewed the tea. The sugar bowl was brought out and sugar tonged into the cups. All the Rangers liked the tea and drank several cups; they decided they approved of English customs.

Prelude
Between the Pedestals of Night and Morning
Between red death and radiant desire
With not one sound of triumph or of warning
Stands the great sentry on the Bridge of Fire.
O transient soul, thy thought with dreams adorning,
Cast down the laurel, and unstring the lyre:
the wheels of Time are turning, turning, turning,
The slow stream channels deep and doth not tire.
Gods on their bridge above Whispering lies and love Shall mock your passage down the sunless river Which, rolling all it streams, shall take you, king of dreams, -Unthroned and unapproachable for ever- To were the kings who dreamed of old Whiten in habitations monumental cold. James Elroy Flecker, 1884-1915.
Finally this project comes to an end, and thereby concludes the strangest and most chaotic year in my life. In hindsight, I could have done things in a better time and order, but that just did not happen. I hope I did not strain any goodwill too far and that this paper heals all wounds. I wish to thank Lubbert Dijkhuizen and Bauke Dijkstra for allowing me to perform my graduation project at the crystallography group. It was a very interesting time in which I learned a lot of cool stuff. Finally I wish to thank Joost for his time, effort and endurance and of course for his friendship and the great dinners with Conny.

M ore Millen nial Merriment?

By Hilary Williamson
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o'kindness yet
For auld lang syne!
I
t's time to start the Millennial Countdown again. And if that feels like déjà vu to you, well it is. According to the Greenwich Observatory and the Philadelphia Enquirer, the new millennium actually begins on January 1, 2001. So we were mistaken last year and just have to start partying all over again ... but it won't be quite the same with repetition. I f you have a yen for something new, then how about buying one out of a couple of hundred thousand tickets to participate in Edinburgh's Hogmanay , a grand outdoors party where you can join hands and sing Auld Lang Syne with descendants of Rabbie Burns. Or just stay home and plan for revelry in your own neighborhood.

The Fantasy Fan
REH to Charles D. Hornig, 1 November 1933: "Thanks for the copy of The Fantasy Fan. I found it very interesting, and think it has a good future. Anybody ought to be willing to pay a dollar for the privilege of reading, for a whole year, the works of Lovecraft, Smith, and Derleth. I am glad to see that you announce a poem by Smith in the next issue. He is a poet second to none. I also hope you can persuade Lovecraft to let you use some of his superb verse. Weird poetry possesses an appeal peculiar to itself and the careful use of it raises the quality of any magazine. ¶ I liked very much the department of 'True Ghost Stories' and hope you will continue it. The world is full of unexplained incidents and peculiar circumstances, the logical reasons of which are often so obscure and hidden that they are lent the illusion of the supernatural. ¶ Enclosed find my check for a year's subscription.
