E.M.Forster (1879-1970)
By Stephen Spender Two years ago, a young American writer living in London remarked to me how wonderful he thought it was to be living at a time when E. M. Forster was alive. Believing that Forster, though almost ninety, would still be pleased at such recognition, I arranged for the young writer to visit him at his Cambridge rooms so imaginatively provided by the Fellows of King's, his old college. Afterward my American friend told me that in the course of their conversation, Forster had inquired whether he had ever been to Greece: to which he replied no, that it seemed impossible (on account of those Colonels) to go now. Forster (1879-1970) We take a look at the life and times of this highly respected English novelist Edward Morgan Forster was a writer much concerned with the interplay of people's personalities and the conflicts that arose between English Edwardian conventions and the human instinct for spontaneity. He was born in London on 1st January 1879, the only child of a doting mother (his father died when he was only two years of age) and a collection of formidable aunts. He became a day-boy at Tonbridge School, before going to King's College, Cambridge, were he struck up a close friendship with the eccentric don, Goldsworthy Lowes Dickinson. Here he became a member of its 'secret society', the Apostles, which influenced him profoundly, instilling in him concepts of individualism and personal loyalty. His Cambridge connections also led to his involvement with the Bloomsbury Group and to the development of his notion of liberal humanism. Following his graduation, with a degree in Classics and History, he started to pen short stories, some of which were published in the

Comments:
Orrin welcomes reader comments on his reviews. Add yours here. It sounds as if you are a stuck up english snob who believes in the false righteousness of the English Empire. It is the Indians right to falter and they have not done so. No society is perfect and there are always going to be tensions when you unte a diverse a country as India. Regarding the novel, Forster was trying to make a relevant point in the way India was governed. England disregarded the rights of the common Indian in his own country whether they were muslim or hindu. Your review is not only misguided but also confusing: your point is unclear and I am not quite sure whether you are remarking on the politics in the Indian Subcontinent or the book
