E.M. Forster,
"The Air-Ship" E.M. Forster
(1879-1970) was an English novelist and critic. As Darcy O'Brien writes in The World Book Encyclopedia (1981), "His novels show his interest in personal relationships and in the social, psychological, and racial obstacles to such relationships." His novels include A Room with a View Howards End (1910), and A Passage to India (1924), all of which were made into feature films during a 1990s resurgence of interest in Forster's work. His books of essays and literary criticism include Aspects of the Novel (1927) and Two Cheers for Democracy (1951). Not as well known among Forster's work are his allegorical, fantasy, and science fiction stories, collected in T he Celestial Omnibus (1911) and The Eternal Moment (1928). "The Air-Ship" is Part 1 of a longer story, "The Machine Stops," originally published in The Oxford and Cambridge Review in 1909 and collected in The Eternal Moment "The Machine Stops" text (including "The Air-Ship")
1. Describe the social, political, and environmental conditions of the future world described in the story. Where and how do people live? What does the social structure seem to be? What has happened to the natural environment? What seem to be the primary shared or mainstream values of this global civilization? 3. In what ways do you think today's Internet information and communication network also broadly characterized by individuals in cubicles using electronic tools is similar to the Machine in Forster's story? What differences do you detect? How is a sense of community maintained similarly and differently in each case?

English author and critic, member of Bloomsbury group and friend of Virginia Woolf. After gaining fame as a novelist, Forster spent his 46 remaining years publishing mainly short stories and non-fiction. Forster's central concern was that individuals should 'connect the prose with the passion' within themselves, and that one of the most exacting aspect of the novel is prophecy. "If human nature does alter it will be because individuals manage to look at themselves in a new way. Here and there people - a very few people, but a few novelists are among them - are trying to do this. Every institution and vested interest in against such a search: organized religion, the State, the family in its economic aspect, have nothing to gain, and it is only when outward prohibitions weaken that it can proceed: history conditions it to that extent."
(from Aspects of the Novel, 1927)

Passage to India by E. M. Forster
Synopsis
Forster's master work and last novel, A Passage to India explores the problems of establishing friendships across cultural boundaries such as those that existed in India under British rule. The central character is a young Indian doctor accused of raping a young Englishwoman, and although found innocent, his reputation, and friendships, are ruined. Web pages about E. M. Forster: E. M. GL: E.M. Forster (1879-1970), literary critic, essayist and novelist, is primarily concerned with human relationships, the conformity of people to unchallenged social conventions and their need for individual identity and a spontaneous life. In his novels he emphasises the importance of interpersonal contacts and criticises insular complacency and hypocrisy by contrasting British culture with foreign traditions and virtues. ZL/GA: It will be the aim of this SE to familiarise students with two of Forster's major novels, Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924). Students will first be introduced to Forster's life and time and his literary and philosophical concepts; in subsequent meetings the two novels will be analysed in depth. Topics will include: Forster's humanist philosophy, the structure of the novels and their symbolic content, the presentation and clash of different attitudes and cultures, the delineation of characters and their respective functions, Forster's concept of "only connect", his picture of India, his social and cultural criticism, to be followed finally by an assessment of his art and literary achievement.

Foster, E.M.
English novelist and essayist, whose novels, written in a style notable for its conciseness and fluidity, explore the attitudes that create barriers between people.
Two volumes of short stories were published by Forster during his lifetime, The Celestial Omnibus (1914) and The Eternal Moment (1924). Maurice (1971; written 1913-1914), a novel, and The Life to Come (1972; written throughout his life), a collection of short stories, both primarily on homosexual themes, were not published until after Forster's death.
Forster's convictions and outlook were clearly expressed in his essay collections, Abinger Harvest (1936) and Two Cheers for Democracy (1951), as well as in his travel books, The Hill of Devi (1953), an account of his sojourn in India and the real basis for A Passage to India, and Alexandria: A History and a Guide (1922; revised 1961). The latter was based on Forster's civilian duties there during World War I (1914-1918). A variety of other literary endeavors included editorship, for a brief period after World War I, of the Daily Herald, a Labour Party newspaper; the libretto for the opera Billy Budd (1951), by the English composer Benjamin Britten; and an important piece of literary criticism, Aspects of the Novel, based on lectures he gave at Cambridge in 1927.
Forster, an honorary fellow of King's College, resided there from 1946 until his death in Coventry, England on June 7, 1970. Forster's critical reputation has remained high, and popular interest in his novels has been fueled by the recent films made from his works: A Passage to India (1984); A Room with a View (1985); Maurice (1987); Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991); and Howards End (1992).
