Eserleri:
  • Meleklerin Korktuðu Yer (1905) Howard'ýn Sonu (1910) Hindistan Seyahati (1922) En Uzun Yolculuk (1907) Manzaralý Oda (1908) Maurice (1914)
Kýsa Hikayeleri:
  • Kutsal Otobüs (1911) Bir Panik Hikayesi (1911) Çitin Öte Yaný (1911) Baþka Bir Krallýk (1911) Papazýn Arkadaþý (1911) Colonus'tan Gelen Yol (1911) Makine Duruyor (1928) O'nun Ýþareti (1928) Mr. Andrews (1928)

In l907, when Kipling became the first Englishman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, his critical reputation was already in decline. George Orwell, the strongest anti-imperialist voice of his generation, summed up the paradox in 1942: “During five literary generations, every enlightened person has despised him, and at the end of that time nine-tenths of those enlightened persons are forgotten and Kipling is in some sense still there.” . . . Scarcely one of the proliferating studies of “Orientalism” leaves Kim undiscussed, and every newspaper reminds us that India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are nearer than we thought.
He was forever Forster, forever paying attention. It was hard to believe he had ever belonged to the Bloomsbury group or any other group, and he figures in their writings only as an occasional presence. As to the classic question “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?” he might have answered “I was.” When you showed her what you were writing, he once told me ruefully, she would tell you what she thought. “One felt the better for it, but not the happier.” He once described the Greek poet Cavafy, whom he had known in Egypt, as standing at a slightly odd angle to the universe, and that might have been said too of him.
[Toscanini’s] legacy was to raise the standards of both opera production and orchestral performance through exacting demands, like Wagner’s, that a “performance” be conceived as a total work of art. Today’s audiences can hardly appreciate the ahistorically high standards to which they have grown accustomed. Music seasons are now planned years in advance rather than produced ad hoc as circumstances of the moment may dictate. Audiences now sit quietly respectful, not walking, eating, talking, playing cards and flirting (to echo Sachs), while highly skilled musicians rehearse to a point of near perfection before going public.

Biographical Sketch
Edward Morgan Forster was born January 1, 1879, in London. His father, also Edward Morgan, was an architect and died of consumption 18 months after the birth of his son, leaving him in the care of his mother, Alice Clara Whichelo and a variety of female relatives. Forster's mother moved with her young son to rural Hertfordshire in 1883 where he lived for most of his childhood before being sent to Kent House preparatory school in Eastbourne. In 1887 a great-aunt left a legacy to Forster which, when combined with his father's estate, paid for Forster's education and later allowed him the leisure to be a writer without needing to worry about income. Forster finished his school days at Tonbridge School, which he attended as a day student rather than as a boarder between 1893-1897. In the autumn of 1897, Forster entered King's College, Cambridge, where he found liberation from the conformist attitudes of preparatory school. He was elected to the Apostles in 1901, along with Desmond MacCarthy, and became acquainted with the well-known alumni of that society, G.E. Moore, Lytton Strachey, John Maynard Keynes, Leonard Woolf, and Roger Fry, among others, who later introduced him into the Bloomsbury group. It was at Cambridge that Forster began to think of himself as a writer and the years immediately following his graduation were his most productive as a novelist. Between 1903 and 1910 he produced

Biographical Sketch
Leonard Russell, editor and literary anthologist, was born in London in 1906. He began his career in journalism at the DAILY TELEGRAPH registering the editor's incoming review copies. Cyril Lakin later made Russell an assistant when Lakin was appointed literary editor of the DAILY TELEGRAPH in 1929, and of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1933. When Russell succeeded Lakin literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1945, he contracted talents such as Cyril Connolly, Harold Hobson, Raymond Mortimer, and Hugh Trevor-Roper, who helped make the SUNDAY TIMES a leading voice in the literary community. He remained literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES until 1954. In addition to these accomplishments, Russell founded THE SATURDAY REVIEW in 1941, worked briefly on GO magazine after leaving the SUNDAY TIMES, and later returned to the newspaper, where he edited a succession of serials that changed the character of Sunday journalism and increased the SUNDAY TIMES' circulation dramatically. Notable serializations under Russell's direction include Lord Montgomery's memoirs, Somerset Maugham's TEN NOVELS AND THEIR AUTHORS, and William Manchester's DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. In his later years Russell was involved in several publishing projects, including THE PEARL OF DAYS, an unofficial history of the SUNDAY TIMES.
