, who was one of his closest friends, wrote of him. "He seems to have the particular talent of knowing more about what he is saying and with less pains than anyone else. His converstaion is like a brilliant player at billiards, the strokes follow one another piff puff...." The Duchess met him in 1777 when Fox was 28 years old but he already had an enormous reputation and had led a very full life. He had been in parliament from the age of 19, at 21 he was first lord of the Admiralty. He could speak 5 languages fluently was renowned as the best orator of his day and had frittered away a fortune of a quarter of million pounds (a good income for a lord's son at this time was around five thousand pounds). He received an eclectic upbringing for while he had only the best in education his father also believed that 'nothing should be done to break his spirit' so he was fully indulged. While still a child he had been promised that he might watch a wall being demolished on the family estate. However, when his rather found out that it had been demolished with Charles being there to see this happen, he insisted that the wall be rebuilt and demolished again so Charles might have the promised treat.

Charles James Fox born Jan. 24, 1749, London
died Sept. 13, 1806, Chiswick, Devon, England Britain's first foreign secretary (1782, 1783, 1806), a famous champion of liberty, whose career, on the face of it, was nevertheless one of almost unrelieved failure. He conducted against King George III a long and brilliant vendetta; for this reason he was almost always in political opposition and, in fact, held high office for less than a year altogether. He achieved only two important reforms, steering through Parliament a resolution pledging it to abolish the slave trade speedily and, in the 1792 Libel Act, restoring to juries their right to decide not merely whether an allegedly libellous article had, in fact, been published but also what constituted libel in any given case and whether or not a defendant was guilty of it. Early life. Entry into politics. Fox was procured a seat in Parliament by his father in 1768. Two years later he was appointed a junior lord of the Admiralty but gave up his office in February 1772 in order that he might be free to oppose a bill (eventually the Royal Marriage Act) designed to prevent marriages of members of the royal family unless authorized by the king or ratified by the Privy Council. He reentered the government the following December as a junior lord of the Treasury, but the King, who already disliked him for his recent opposition, accused him of insubordination and dismissed him in February 1774. Already a friend of Edmund Burke, he naturally gravitated into the Whig group and before long was their accepted leader in the Commons. He went into opposition just when the controversy with the American colonies was becoming acute. Believing that the colonial policy of the prime minister Lord North was unjust and oppressive, he opposed it with unrestrained violence, but he later admitted that the American war was popular in England. The series of disasters sustained by the British troops in America, culminating in the capitulation of the army led by Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown (October 1781), eventually brought down North's government (March 1782). The King had to call in a Whig ministry, of which Lord Rockingham became prime minister, and Lord Shelburne (later marquess of Lansdowne) colonial secretary; Fox became the first foreign secretary in English history.

Fox, Charles James 1749-1806, British statesman and orator, for many years the outstanding parliamentary proponent of liberal reform. He entered Parliament in 1768 and served as lord of the admiralty (1770-72) and as lord of the treasury (1772-74) under Frederick, Lord North . Dismissed by George III, he went into bitter opposition, lending his remarkable oratorical genius to the attack on North's policy in North America. Despite the king's objection, he became foreign secretary in the marquess of Rockingham's Whig ministry (1782) and helped to secure the repeal of Poynings's Law (see under Poynings, Sir Edward ), thus giving Ireland legislative independence. He quarreled with the earl of Shelburne over the negotiation of peace with the former American colonies, France, and Spain, and he resigned when Shelburne succeeded Rockingham. Fox then allied himself with his old enemy, Lord North, to insure Shelburne's defeat, and he became (1783) foreign secretary again, in a coalition with North. This ministry fell in the same year, when George III brought his influence to bear in the House of Lords to secure defeat of Fox's bill vesting the government of India in a commission nominated by Parliament. He was replaced in office by William Pitt, whom he bitterly opposed for the rest of his life. In 1788, when George III became temporarily insane, Fox wanted an unrestricted regency vested in the prince of Wales (later

Charles James Fox Charles James Fox (1749-1806) inherited wealth and guidance from his father, who tutored him in gambling and who advised, "Never do today what you can put off 'till tomorrow." In 1768, just nineteen, the roguish Charles Fox took his seat in Parliament and quickly earned the esteem of his colleagues, Edmund Burke among them. The two joined forces on many causes, including that of the American Revolution, until Burke's horror over the French Revolution occasioned a permanent break. Fox fought for religious toleration, called for abolishing the slave trade, and advocated electoral reform. In defending his views he was a powerful orator, acknowledged as the ablest debater of his day. Neither party nor crown could dissuade him from following his own path. Above all things Fox hated oppression and intolerance, and in his passion for liberty transcended the conventional party politics of his day.
    John Wilkes
Like Fox, John Wilkes (1727-1797), too, could be extravagant in his passions. He married into his money and was an active member of the proudly blasphemous Hellfire Club. A few years after joining Parliament in 1757, he began a weekly journal, The North Briton , that became notorious for its wit and wickedness. In the famous issue #45, Wilkes assailed a speech given in the King's name; he was jailed for his temerity. His

FOX (CHARLES JAMES, 1749-1806, statesman 4 pages, quarto, headed 'Private', recipient's endorsement, Stable Yard, 9 June 1806 At the time of writing Charles James Fox was Foreign Secretary in the 'All the Talents' administration led by Grenville. Just over three months after writing this letter he was dead (died on 13 September 1806). On 10 June he had moved for the abolition of the slave trade, declaring that after forty years of political life he should feel he could retire with contentment if he carried his motion. Henry Edward Fox (1755-1811) was in such ill health himself that the hero of Corunna, Sir John Moore, undertook the entire management of both military and diplomatic matters in Siciliy. On his recovery General Fox came into such conflict with the Neapolitan court that he was recalled. The present letter is one of the best by Fox, in many respects the most charismatic of eighteenth-century English politicians, to have come on the market in recent years.
