B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Sir James (George) Frazer (1854-1941) British anthropologist, historian of religion and classical scholar, whose best-known study THE GOLDEN BOUGH: A STUDY IN COMPARATIVE RELIGION traced the evolution of human behavior, ancient and primitive myth, magic, religion, ritual, and taboo. The study appeared first in two volumes in 1890 and finally in 12 volumes in 1911-15. It was named after the golden bough in the sacred grove at Nemi, near Rome. Frazer did much to popularize anthropology and made its agnostic tendencies acceptable, although his conclusions are now outdated. "It is said, too, that sailors, beating up against the wind in the Gulf of Finland, sometimes see a strange sail heave in sight astern and overhaul them hand over hand. On she comes with a cloud of canvas - all her studding-sails out - right in the teeth of the wind, forging her way through the foaming billows, dashing back the spray in sheets from her cutwater, every sail swollen to bursting, every rope to strained to cracking. The sailors know that she hails from Finland." (from The New Golden Bough , ed. by Theodor H. Gaster, 1959)

Sir James George Frazer
Written and compiled by George Knowles.
Sir James George Frazer was a leading Anthropologist, Folklorist and Classical Scholar. A respected academic by his peers and colleagues, he devoted much of his life researching the early history of mankind; he studied, wrote and theorized on the early magical thinking into religious thought. His most famous book The Golden Bough: a Study in Magic and Religion , became an instant classic when first it was published in 1890. James George Frazer was a Scotsman, born in Brandon Place, Glasgow in 1854. He was the eldest of four children borne by his father Daniel Frazer and his mother Katherine Frazer, nee Bogle. Katherine’s grandfather was George Bogle who is reported to have been Warren Hasting’s envoy to Tibet in 1774. His father Daniel was a wealthy middle-class Pharmacist who lead the family as devout followers of the Free Church of Scotland into whose doctrines James would be raised. In the mid-1860s his father Daniel purchased a new property at Helensburgh on the Gareloch.

The blurb on the book jacket: Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941) was a Scottish anthropologist with a particular interest in the study of myth and religion. His early research in the development of religion, as humanity progressed from primitive to civilized social structures, ripened into a set of theories about the historical evolution of ancient cults, rites, rituals, and religious beliefs. The Golden Bough , is Frazer's greatest and best known work, a repository of his mature theories. In it, Frazer takes as his starting point an investigation into the succession rituals of the priest kings of Diana's Grove, a sacred wood in ancient Italy; the rite involved the ancient custom of allowing a runaway slave to fight the king and perhaps take his title if he could first pull down a bough from a special golden tree. Frazer saw a link between this story and Virgil's epic poem the Aeneid , wherein possession of a golden bough allows the hero Aeneas to enter the Underworld. Much of Frazer's book derives from this exploration of ancient tree worship, of the attempt of early peoples to control nature, and of the ritual killing of divine kings.

Frazer, Sir James George 1854-1941, Scottish classicist and anthropologist, b. Glasgow, educated at the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge. He is known especially for his masterpiece, The Golden Bough, published originally in two volumes (1890); in later editions it was enlarged to 13 volumes. A monumental study in comparative folklore, magic, and religion, it showed parallels between the rites and beliefs of early cultures and those of Christianity. The work had a great impact on the early 20th cent., its influence extending to psychology and literature. An abridged one-volume edition was published by the author in 1923. A new one-volume version, cut and annotated by T. H. Gaster, appeared in 1959 as The New Golden Bough. Frazer's other writings include Totemism and Exogamy (1910) and its supplement, Totemica The Belief in Immortality and the Worship of the Dead (3 vol., 1913-24); Folklore in the Old Testament (1919, abr. ed. 1923); and
