British anthropologist, historian of religion and classical scholar, whose best-known study THE GOLDEN BOUGH: A STUDY IN COMPARATIVE RELIGION traced the evolution of human behaviour, ancient and primitive myth, magic, religion, ritual, and taboo. The study appeared first in two volumes in 1890 and finally in 12 volumes in 1911-15. It was named after the golden bough in the sacred grove at Nemi, near Rome. Frazer did much to popularise anthropology and made its agnostic tendencies acceptable, although his conclusions are now outdated. James Frazer was born in Glasgow, Scotland, into a pious middle-class family, as the eldest of four children of Daniel K. Frazer, a pharmacist, and Katherine (Brown) Frazer. He was educated at Larchfield Academy, Helensburgh, and University of Glasgow and then at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he became a classics fellow from 1871 until his death. Except for one year, 1907-08, spent at the University of Liverpool as professor of social anthropology, Frazer remained from 1908 most of his life in Cambridge.

FRAZER ( Sir JAMES GEORGE, 1854-1941, social anthropologist, author of The Golden Bough ) GOOD AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('James G. Frazer'), to Lyttelton [probably to Edward Lyttelton, headmaster of Eton], summarising his life's work and his attitude to religion, 2 pages, quarto, Queen Anne's Mansions, St. James's Park, London SW1, 19 June 1927 '...I deeply sympathize with and respect it [the religious view of life], though I do not share it. My childhood was passed in a religious atmosphere, for my dear and honoured parents were devout Christians...Our religious differences (which we never discussed), far from being a barrier, have rather been a link between us...for I have a tenderness for the old faith and for those who hold it, and I never forget how little we know and can ever hope to know about the ultimate problems. Hardly anything offends me so much as the confident dogmatism of some rationalists. My work has lain chiefly among the crude elementary religions of the lower races; I have not seriously studied the great historical religions of the civilised peoples and have therefore little or no claim to speak about them. Such as my conclusions, tentative and provisional, are on the early history of religion and society...' In the preface to his selections from the Bible of passages chosen for their literary merit (referred to in the present letter) Frazer made points similar to those herein.

Proseminare Magie, Mana, Totem: Evolutionsmodelle des Ursprungs von Religion Dr. Martin Baumann SE 2, Di 16-18, Raum: Im Moore 21, Seminarraum Herkunft und Urspung von Religionen und `Religion' wurden im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert gesonderter Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Betrachtung. "Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Before Joseph Campbell became the world's most famous practitioner of comparative mythology, there was Sir James George Frazer. The Golden Bough was originally published in two volumes in 1890, but Frazer became so enamored of his topic that over the next few decades he expanded the work sixfold, then in 1922 cut it all down to a single thick edition suitable for mass distribution. The thesis on the origins of magic and religion that it elaborates "will be long and laborious," Frazer warns readers, "but may possess something of the charm of a voyage of discovery, in which we shall visit many strange lands, with strange foreign peoples, and still stranger customs." Chief among those customsat least as the book is remembered in the popular imaginationis the sacrificial killing of god-kings to ensure bountiful harvests, which Frazer traces through several cultures, including in his elaborations the myths of Adonis, Osiris, and Balder. While highly influential in its day
