Background Information
This week your background reading consists of an overview of some of the major mythology and folk tale collections, including Joseph Jacobs; the stories you will be reading this week are taken from Joseph Jacobs' English Fairy Tales (1890). Although storytelling traditions go back for many thousands of years, the efforts to collect and record these stories in written form is comparatively recent. The following are some of the major figures in the modern history of collecting myths and legends: 14th century Giovanni Boccaccio Decameron , but he is also the author of a book called De genealogiis deorum gentilium (The genealogies of the pagan gods), which is the first modern encyclopedia of the Greek and Roman myths. 17th century Giovanni Battista Basile Pentamerone contains 50 folktales and fairy tales written in the dialect of the city of Naples. Stories such as Rapunzel and Cinderella are included in the Pentamerone Charles Perrault (1628-1703). After spending his career as a civil servant in Paris France, Perrault then spent his retirement collecting French fairy tales and retelling them for children. He published his

The Golden Bough
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Golden Bough : A Study in Magic and Religion was originally (1900) a 13-volume work on the roots of European mythology and religion by British anthropologist Sir James George Frazer (1854-1941). He abridged the work into one 870-page volume, also titled The Golden Bough , in 1922. Later scholars in several fields have built upon the foundation he laid, especially those in comparative religion. The salient point of this seminal book (see The White Goddess ) is that "primitive" religions from around the world share a great deal in common with each other and "modern" religions such as Christianity. The title was taken from the painting The Golden Bough by the British artist Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) that showed Aeneas and the Sybil presenting the golden bough to the gatekeeper of Hades to gain admission.
