Article from Encarta Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939), Austrian physician and founder of psychoanalysis . Through his skill as a scientist, physician, and writer, he created an entirely new approach to the understanding of human personality by bringing together ideas prevalent at the time, along with his own observation and study, into a major theory of psychology . Most importantly, he applied these ideas to medical practice in the treatment of mental disorders . These newly created psychotherapy treatments and procedures, many of which in modified form are applied today, were based on his understanding of unconscious thought processes and their relationship to neurotic Early Life Freud was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic) on May 6, 1856. When he was three years old, the family was forced to flee riots that characterized the strong anti-Semitic feeling that prevailed within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After a brief period in Leipzig the family settled in Vienna , where Freud remained for most of his life. At school the young Freud was at first drawn towards study of the law, but on reading the work of

Sigmund Freud, 1856-1939
Sigmund Freud, the Austrian founder of psychoanalysis, the Copernicus of the Mind , and father of Anna Freud, was born at Freiburg, Moravia, of Jewish parents. Inspired by Goethe's essay on nature, Freud studied medicine at Vienna but original work in physiology delayed his graduation until 1881. He then specialized in neurology and, stimulated by the discoveries of the Viennese physician Josef Breuer, that hysteria can be cured by making a patient recall painful memories under hypnosis, studied under Jean Martin Charcot in Paris (1885) and changed over from neurology to psychopathology. Upon his return to Vienna he published two studies on aphasia and cerebral paralysis, before risking, with Breuer, the joint publication of Studien über Hysterie Finding hypnosis inadequate, Freud gradually substituted the method of free association , allowing his patients to ramble on with his or her thoughts when in a state of relaxed consciousness and, interpreting the data, an abundance of childhood and dream recollections. He became convinced of the fact of infantile sexuality. This became the basis of his theory and cost him his friendship with Breuer (1897), lost him many patients and isolated him from the conservative medical profession. He worked on alone, publishing in 1900 his greatest work, The Interpretation of Dreams , an exhaustive study of dream material, including his own, which showed that dreams, like neuroses, are disguised manifestations of repressed wishes of a sexual origin.

http://facultyfp.salisbury.edu/iewhite/Sigmund_Freud.htm
Sigmund Freud Three major blows to self-esteem of humans: the earth is not the center of the universe; man was descended from lower animals; human behavior is primarily instinctive and motivated by unconscious processes. (Copernicus, Darwin, Freud) The Young Professional: training with Charcot and Bernheim introduced him to the phenomenon of hypnosis , posthypnotic amnesia and posthypnotic suggestion and the use of hypnosis to treat hysteria in women. Anna O: example of a hysteric: paralysis of various parts of her body, problems with vision, deafness, nervous cough, periodic eating disorders, suicidal impulses, hallucinations, inability to speak in her native tongue. Patient of Breuer who used the “talking cure” or catharsis to explore the origin of each of the symptoms and remove them systematically. Anna O transferred her feelings regarding her father to her analyst, Breuer. He became emotionally involved in her life, an example of therapeutic countertransference. Anna O was later identified as Bertha Pappenheim, who died in 1936. After treatment with Breuer, she was admitted to an sanitorium with the same hysterical symptoms, treated with morphine.
