Dúsgazdag nagypolgári családból származott, öröksége biztosította a gondtalan életet. Galsworthy nemcsak szerette, hanem tudatosan követni is kívánta

Galsworthy, John 1867-1933, English novelist and dramatist. Winner of the 1932 Nobel Prize in Literature, he is best remembered for his series of novels tracing the history of the wealthy Forsyte family from the 1880s to the 1920s. Of an old and rich family, Galsworthy spent his youth in relative leisure, studied at Oxford, was called to the bar in 1890, and in 1894 began a period of extensive travel. After the publication of his first novel, Jocelyn The Forsyte Saga (1922), includes The Man of Property In Chancery (1920), and To Let (1921). The second trilogy, A Modern Comedy (1928), includes The White Monkey The Silver Spoon (1926), and Swan Song (1928). The third group, End of the Chapter (1934), includes Maid in Waiting Flowering Wilderness (1932), and One More River (1933). Galsworthy also wrote a series of dramas concerned with various social problems. Although their impartiality makes them less than exciting, the plays were remarkably successful. They include The Silver Box Strife Justice The Pigeon The Skin Game Loyalties (1922), and

Galsworthy, John John Galsworthy (1867-1933) was educated at Harrow and studied law at New College, Oxford. He travelled widely and at the age of twenty-eight began to write, at first for his own amusement. His first stories were published under the pseudonym John Sinjohn and later were withdrawn. He considered The Island Pharisees (1904) his first important work.
Galsworthy was a dramatist of considerable technical skill. His plays often took up specific social grievances such as the double standard of justice as applied to the upper and lower classes in The Silver Box (1906) and the confrontation of capital and labour in Strife (1909). Justice (1910), his most famous play, led to a prison reform in England. Galsworthy's reaction o the First World War found its expression in The Mob (1914), in which the voice of a statesman is drowned in the madness of the war-hungry masses; and in enmity of the two families of The Skin Game (1920). From Nobel Lectures, Literature 1901-1967.

English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. Galsworthy became known for his portrayal of the British upper middle class and for his social satire. His most famous work was THE FORSYTE SAGA. Galsworthy was a representative of the literary tradition which has regarded the novel as a lawful instrument of social propaganda. He believed that it was the duty of an artist to state a problem, to throw light upon it, but not to provide a solution. Before starting his career as a writer Galsworthy read widely the works of Kipling, Zola, Turgenev, Tolstoy, and Flaubert. "He emerged still thinking about the English. Well! They were now one of the plainest and most distorted races of the world; and yet was there any race to compare with them for good temper and for 'guts'? And they needed those in their smoky towns, and their climate - remarkable instance of adaptation to environment, the modern English character! 'I could pick out an Englishman anywhere,' he thought, ' and yet, physically, there's no general type now!' Astounding people!"

    Biography
John Galsworthy was born August 14, 1867 in Surrey, England, the son of a well-to-do solicitor. He had typical childhood of that time, was sent away to public school and then went to Oxford, where he studied law and graduated in 1889. In 1891 he meet his cousin's wife, Ada Pearson Cooper Galsworthy and four years later they initiate an affair, later marrying in 1905 after Ada Galsworthy gets a divorce. They had a close, inter-dependent relationship. It only ended with Galsworthy's death in 1933. Galsworthy showed little interest in being a lawyer, and in 1892 he meets Joseph Conrad, with whom he developed a life-long friendship. Conrad, among other friends, encouraged Galsworthy to attempt writing. In 1897 Galsworthy has his first book of short stories published, and in 1898 his first novel is published, Jocelyn. Conrad introduces Galsworthy to several important and influential literary men, including Ford Madox Ford and Edward Garnett, the latter having a strong influence on Galsworthy, encouraging and editing his writings. In 1906 Galsworthy published The Man of Property, the first novel in the series, The Forsythe Saga. This novel placed Galsworthy among the pre-eminent novelists of his day. However, it was his plays that brought him public recognition, starting with The Silver Box. Galsworthy continued writing steadily, gaining more and more fame and celebrity, culminating in his winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932. John Galsworthy died on January 31, 1933.

    John Galsworthy (1867-1933)
English novelist and playwright, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1932.
Galsworthy was also a successful dramatist, his plays, written in a naturalistic style, usually examining some controversial ethical or social problem. They include The Silver Box (1906), which, like many of his other works, has a legal theme and depicts a bitter contrast of the law's treatment of the rich and the poor; Strife (1909), a study of industrial relations; Justice (1910), a realistic portrayal of prison life that roused so much feeling that it led to reform; and Loyalties (1922), the best of his later plays. He also wrote verse.
In 1905 Galsworthy married Ada Pearson, the divorced wife of his first cousin, A.J. Galsworthy. Galsworthy had, in secret, been closely associated with his future wife for about ten years before their marriage. Irene in The Forsyte Saga is to some extent a portrait of Ada Galsworthy, although her first husband was wholly unlike Soames Forsyte.
