John Galt
The son of a sea captain, John Galt was born in Irvine on 2 May 1799. The family moved to Greenock in 1789, and after leaving the Grammar School John was apprenticed to the Custom House and became a junior clerk with local merchant James Miller in 1796. Galt began to write essays and stories for local journals while pursuing his business ambitions. He moved to London in 1804 to seek his fortune, but failed to find it, and he studied law at Lincoln's Inn in 1809, then travelled in Europe for two years, becoming a friend of Lord Byron , of whom he would write the first full biography. On his return he published an account of his travels, which met with some success. In 1813 Galt tried to set up a trading company in Gibraltar to circumvent Napoleon's embargo on British trade in Europe, but Wellington's victory in Spain made this no longer necessary. Galt returned to London, where he married Elizabeth Tilloch. In 1815 he became Secretary of the Royal Caledonian Asylum in London, and acted as a consultant in several business ventures. For some months in 1818 he lived in Glasgow, and in 1819-20 he wrote a number of school textbooks under the pseudonym "Rev. T. Clark". Between 1820 and 1822 he wrote six novels for serialisation in Blackwood's Magazine, among them his most famous, "The Annals Of The Parish", in which elderly minister Micah Balwhidder recounts events in the imaginary Ayrshire village of Dalmailing. Galt lived briefly in Edinburgh while writing "Sir Andrew Wylie" and "The Provost" for Blackwood. Displeased with Blackwood's editorial interference in his work, he broke with him after "The Entail" and moved to another Edinburgh publisher, Oliver and Boyd, for his novel of the Covenanters, "Ringan Gilhaize" (1823). He later returned to Blackwood.

John Galt
Novelist
Galt was born in Irvine on 2nd May 1779. His family moved to Greenock when he was ten and he stayed there for the next ten years. He moved to London in 1804 and tried to establish himself in business with little success. From 1809 to 1811 he toured the countries of the Mediterranean and became acquainted with Lord Byron , of whom he wrote the first biography. He wrote plays, poetry and biography before discovering his real métier as a novelist. From 1827 to 1829 he acted as manager of a company engaged in the settlement of a large part of Ontario. Some of his other works, especially his Autobiography and Life of Byron , are interesting, but Galt's main achievement lies in thirteen novels which are innovative, diverse, intelligent and highly entertaining. A group of them which Galt called Tales of the West , are set mainly in the part of Scotland where he grew up: The Ayrshire legatees The Steamboat and Annals of the parish Sir Andrew Wylie The Provost The Gathering of the West The Entail The Last of the lairds (1826). Together they amount to a comprehensive picture of life in the world of Galt's youth and for a generation or two before, from about 1760 to about 1820.

John Galt and the Canada Company
University of Guelph, McLaughlin Library Subjects Galt, John, 1779-1839; Canada Company (London); Huron Tract (Ontario) History Begun in 1975 as a fitting tribute to the founder of Guelph, the collection has been expanded whenever suitable material has been available. The library collections had already contained some Canada Company material and this also has been greatly expanded as material became available. Description The John Galt Collection includes almost all published works by John Galt, including many rare and first editions. The library is attempting to acquire copies of every variant edition (including American pirated editions) in the original issue state. The H.B.Timothy Collection consists of printed and manuscript materials on John Galt and his descendants; the research materials of Jennie Aberdeen, an early biographer of John Galt; and an early two-hundred page draft manuscript of a biography of Sir Walter Scott by John Galt. The Lizars Collection contains six original John Galt letters (his son, John Galt, married a Lizars) and many letters by other family members, especially Sir Alexander T. Galt, and his son Elliot Torrance Galt. Various other archival collections contain some twenty five examples of original Canada Company land deeds. The library's holdings contain books, pamphlets, and maps connected with the Canada Company. Language English predominates. Original works by Galt are collected in any language (only French and German are known), and critical material in any language is collected on Galt or the Canada Company.
