Garland Hall, at 2441 E. Hartford Avenue, was built in 1910, and was acquired in the Milwaukee-Downer College campus purchase. During its Milwaukee-Downer days the building was called Vogel Hall for Louise Pfister Vogel , and housed a dormitory, dining room, and study hall. UWM renamed the building for Pulitzer-winning writer Hamlin Garland (1860-1940), who was born in West Salem, Wisconsin. It was extensively renovated in 1961 and 1985, in such a way that Garland is now a sort of Siamese twin with Pearse Hall to its east. It is four stories plus basement and attic. For the architecturally-minded: not a lot of the original 1910 interior is still visible, especially in our area. Parts of the original exterior still remain, but most interior walls are wallboard over metal studs (or brick walls, or wooden beams), installed over (or in addition to) the original walls during the 1985 renovation. One of the more bizarre features is the noteworthy portions of the original exterior brickwork which are now to be found in the interior of the remodelled building, serving as interior walls in hallways and stairwells! return to the Cultures and Communities' New Home Information Page this page last updated October 25, 2001; this page maintained by
