GASKELL (ELIZABETH CLEGHORN, 1810-1865, novelist and biographer of Charlotte Bronte 6 pages, octavo, 46 Plymouth Grove, 13 January 1862 Mrs Gaskell had first met Charles Eliot Norton in 1850 and he had later written that Cranford Atlantic Monthly , a magazine founded by James Russell Lowell, but she refused to adapt her style for an American audience. Elizabeth Gaskell herself supported abolition and the North, but loathed war, and saw the Civil War as another bitter example of a world 'where might is right and violence is law.' Edward Dicey published Six Months in the Federal States in 1863.

Elizabeth Gaskell Cranford (1853) and Wives and Daughters (1866) have been the most acclaimed of her works, although today Mary Barton (1848), her first novel, and North and South (1855) receive more critical attention. The two pairs of novels represent Gaskell's prevailing interests as an author: provincial life and urban issues. In all of her writing, Gaskell was concerned with how individual lives play out against the pressures of history and social life. Gaskell was the daughter and wife of Unitarian ministers. Born in London, the infant Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson was sent, after the death of her mother, to live with an aunt in the Cheshire village of Knutsford, which would become the model for Cranford and for Hollingford in Wives and Daughters. After her father's death, she visited the urban centers of London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Manchester, and it was in Manchester that she met and married William Gaskell in 1832. Notable American Unitarians Elizabeth Gaskell Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson Gaskell (1810-1865), a lifelong Unitarian and the wife of an eminent Unitarian minister, was the author of a half-dozen novels, numerous short stories, and a biography of Charlotte Brontë. In her fiction she examined some of the the social issues of her time, particularly those associated with industrialization in mid-19th century England, the rise of the middle class, and the status of women. Although her books do not mention Unitarians explicitly, a number of her characters express general Unitarian values or are modeled on Unitarian originals and the plots of the books teach the lessons of her particular form of Unitarian theology. Elizabeth was born in Chelsea, then a rural suburb on the western outskirts of London. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Stevenson, came from long lines of Dissenters: he from a radical branch, she from the more conservative Holland family. The Hollands were related to their fellow Unitarians, the Wedgewoods, and, through them, to the Darwins. Elizabeth's uncle Peter Holland was a physician whose practice included the appentices at nearby Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, a model cotton mill run by the Unitarian Greg family. Prior to his marriage William Stevenson had been a teacher at Manchester Academy and a preacher at Dob Lane Unitarian Chapel, Manchester. Rejecting the idea of paid ministry, he went to Scotland and apprenticed as a "scientific" farmer, 1797-1801. Unlike his friend James Cleghorn, Stevenson was not a success at farming. He was next a teacher and journalist in Edinburgh, 1801-04; then in London a civil servant until death, at the same time writing books and articles on agriculture, topography, and naval history.

Her first novel was Mary Barton, a Tale of Manchester Life (pub. anonymously in 1848), an attack on the behavior of factory employers during the 1840s, a time of depression and hardship for the British working class. Edna Ferber Zona Gale Elizabeth Gaskell Ellen Glasgow ... Martha Grimes Edna Ferber (1885-1968) an American novelist and playwright, wrote many books about the colorful American life of the 1800's. She won the 1925 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for her first best-selling novel, So Big (1924). She also wrote Show Boat Cimarron Saratoga Trunk Giant (1952), and Ice Palace Show Boat was made into a popular musical comedy, and all of these books became successful motion pictures. She said that she intended her books to be social criticism as well as good stories. She often wrote about strong women characters. Ferber's other novels include Dawn O'Hara (1911), her first book; The Girls (1921); and Come and Get It Roast Beef, Medium (1913) is a collection of stories. She had considerable success with the plays she wrote with George S. Kaufman. The best known of these are The Royal Family Dinner at Eight (1932), and Stage Door Ferber was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., but she grew up in Appleton, Wis. Ferber's first ambition was to become an actress. However, at the age of 17, when her father went blind, she took a newspaper job with the Appleton Daily Crescent. Ferber told her life story in two books, A Peculiar Treasure (1939) and A Kind of Magic Zona Gale (1874-1938) was an American author known for her descriptions of small-town life in the Midwest. Her hometown of Portage, Wisconsin, provided the material for much of her fiction.

Inspired by Alciati's work Emblem liber , Montenay composed one hundred Christian emblems and consequently dedicated the volume to Jeanne d'Albert, Queen of Navarre. D'Albert raised Montenay and was a close friend, and she is pictured in the first emblem of the book, building a wall. This volume was first published in 1567 in French, but was consequently translated into Latin in 1584. The engravings are by Pierre Woeriot. Schurman, Anna Maria.
