inverse square of the distance. (A. CA.) GAUSSEN, FRANCOIS SAMUEL ROBERT LOUIS (1790- 1863), Swiss Protestant divine, was born at Geneva on the 25th of August 1790. His father, Georg Markus Gaussen, a member of the council of two hundred, was descended from an old Languedoc family which had been scattered at the time of the religious persecutions in France. At the close of his university career at Geneva, Louis was in 1816 appointed pastor of the Swiss Reformed Church at Satigny near Geneva, where he formed intimate relations with J. E. Cellérier, who had preceded him in the pastorate, and also with the members of the dissenting congregation at Bourg-de-Four, which, together with the Eglise du témoignage, had been fort~ed under the influence of the preaching of James and Robert Haldane in 1817. The Swiss revival was distasteful to the pastors of Geneva ( V~nérable Compagnie des Pasteurs) , and on the 7th of May 1817 they passed an ordinance hostile to it. His best-known work, entitled La T/iéopneustie Cu pleine inspiration des sainles écritures, an elaborate defence of the doctrine of “plenary inspiration,” was originally published in Paris in 1840, and rapidly gained a wide popularity in France, as also, through translations, in England and America. It was followed in I86o by a supplementary treatise on the canon (Le Canon des saintes écritures an double point de vue de la science et de lafoi), which, though also popular, has hardly been so widely read.

    Gautier, Theophile Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835). Gautier was a painter before he turned to writing. His theory of plasticity, that words should be used as the painter and sculptor use their tools, is illustrated in his volumes of poems Voyage en Espagne (1845) and [enamels and cameos] (1852). His other works include the poem (1838), the novel Le Capitaine Fracasse (1863), and L'Histoire de l'art dramatique en France (1858-59). He prepared the way for the Parnassians and symbolists in their reaction against romanticism. See studies by Albert B. Smith (1977), Robert Shell (1982), and Kathleen Bulgin (1988). His daughter, Judith Gautier, La Fille du ciel (1911; tr. The Daughter of Heaven, 1912). Her novels, poems, and essays were usually on Asian subjects. She was the first woman to become a member of the Goncourt Academy.

    Theophile Gautier An eine junge Italienerin Noch knirscht der Februar, von Schnee und Reif umschauert,
    Der Regen peitscht das Dach, kalt pfeifts in den Alleen;
    Du aber seufzest schon: Mein Gott, wie lang das dauert.
    Wann werden im Gehölz wir Veilchen pflücken gehn? Kind, Frankreichs Himmel ist ein Tränensieb. Im Pelze
    Am flammenden Kamin sitzt fröstelnd unser Lenz;
    Paris vergeht im Schmutz, wenn auf dem grünen Schmelze
    Der Wiesen sein Geschmeid längst ausgelegt Florenz. Sieh, kahl sind Park und Flur; zu warten gilts ein Weilchen.
    Dich hat dein Herz getäuscht, das warm und südlich glüht;
    Dein blaues Auge nur, sonst gibts hier noch kein Veilchen
    Und keinen Lenz, als der auf deiner Wange blüht. Rezension I Buchbestellung IV02 © LYRIKwelt
