English poet and dramatist. Best known for The Beggar's Opera

You've probably heard "Weird Al" Yankovic on the radio or recordings, or turned on PBS and seen Mark Russell. Each of them sings other people's songs, but with their own, often satirical words added to make the lyrics relevant and funny. This is called parody and it is exactly what John Gay did with his Beggar's Opera . To create what came to be known as a ballad opera, he concocted a plot that lampooned not only the morals of eighteenth century London, but also the style of Italian opera seria. In doing so, he played to the interests of a broad segment of society and helped to bring about changes on the opera stage. This wide appeal made The Beggar's Opera the most successful theater event of the century. The sources for his songs were equally broad, from parodies of operatic works by George Frideric Handel (the leading composer of Italian opera in England) to folk and popular songs that dated back over a hundred years. The work's influence continued into the twentieth century, when Kurt Weill and Bertold Brecht created a modern version, the Threepenny Opera

The World, I believe, will take so little Notice of me, that I nee not take much of it. The Criticks may see by this Poem, that I walk on Foot, which probably may save me from their Envy. I should be sorry to raise that Passion in Men whom I am so much obliged to, since they allowed me an Honour hitherto only shown to better Writers: That of denying me to be the Author of my own Works. Gentlemen, If there be any thing in this Poem, good enough to displease you, and if it be any Advantage to you to ascribe it to some Person of greater Merit; I shall acquaint you for your comfort, that among many other Obligations, I owe several Hints of it to Dr. Swift. And if you will so far continue your Favour as to write against it, I beg you to oblige me in accepting the following Motto.

O T RIVIA , Goddess, leave these low Abodes,
Celestial Queen, put on thy Robes of Light,
    Now Cynthia
At Sight of thee the Villain sheaths his Sword,
Nor scales the Wall, to steal the wealthy Hoard.
Direct my Footsteps in the Midnight hour. When Night first bids the twinkling Stars appear,
Or with her cloudy Vest inwraps the Air,
Then swarms the busie Street; with Caution tread,
Where the Shop-Windows falling threat thy Head; Still fix thy Eyes intent upon the Throng, And as the Passes open, wind along. Where the fair columns of Saint Clement stand, Strand And the rough Pavement wounds the yielding Tread; Where not a Post protects the narrow Space

    JOHN GAY (
John Gay (September 1685-December 4, 1732), dramatist, poet, balladist, was born in Barnstaple, Devonshire, of an impoverished family. His father, William Gay, died when the boy was ten; his mother had died the year before. He was reared by his paternal uncle, Thomas Gay, who, after sending him to the Free Grammar School of Barnstaple, could think of nothing better to do with him than apprentice him to a silk mercer in London. That did not last long, for a boy whose head was full of dreams and whose hands were congenitally idle; he left his apprenticeship and went back to Barnstaple, where he lived for a while with a paternal uncle, Reverend John Hanmer, a dissenting minister, before returning to London on his ownpresumably as soon as he attained his majority. Just how he lived is not knownperhaps it was then that he acquired the knowledge of the ways of the underworld put to use in The Beggar's Opera , but more probably he was living on the Bohemian fringes of the literary world and beginning his long siege to secure attention at court. Meanwhile he was enabled to bring out a book of poems by subscription in 1720; his mock pastoral
