The Enlightenment found many of its virtues ready-made in the world of ancient Rome: economic abundance, and international political structure and a common language for many people. Of course, the greatness of Rome also led to its eventual collapse and fall, and this singular fact has exercised the mind of the historian ever since. Gibbon was perhaps the first to make such a sustained investigation of this kind of event. The following selection is from Chapter XXXVIII: General Observations on the Fall of the Roman Empire in the West. A brief list of resources follows the excerpt. I never made the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect.
I was never less alone than while by myself.
In the end more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. When the Athenians finally wanted to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free.
Unprovided with original learning, unformed in the habits of thinking, unskilled in the arts of composition, I resolved to write a book.
We live in a vastly complex society which has been able to provide us with a multitude of material things, and this is good, but people are beginning to suspect that we have paid a high spiritual price for our plenty.

Gibbon, Edward (1737 - 1794) UK Writer VD Writer and historian of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon was born in England on April 27, 1737 and spent his youth on the banks of Lake Geneva . As was the tradition with upper class English families, he came to Switzerland to complete his education. The young man studied at the faculty of law, language and history in Lausanne , where he also frequented the literary salons to read the foreign press and play whist. He fell head over heels with the pastor's daughter, Suzanne Curchod, and wanted to marry her, but her father was categorically opposed. Gibbon had to resign himself to a life of celibacy. The young man thus left the city to forget his sorrows, only to return five years later. He wrote his life's work

GIANT’S KETTLE, GIANT’S CAULDRON or POT-HOLE, in GIAOUR (a Turkish adaptation of the Pers. gdwr or gbr, an infidel), a word used by the Turks to describe all who are not Mahommedans, with especial reference to Christians. The word, first employed as a term of contempt and reproach, has become so general that in most cases no insult- is intended in itf use; similarly, in parts of China, the term “foreign devil ‘ has become void of offence. A strict analogy to giaour is found in the Arabic kaffir, or unbeliever, which is so commonly in usc as to have become the proper name ‘of peoples and countries. GIB, ADAM (1714—1788), Scottish divine and leader of thi Antiburgher section of the Scottish Secession Church, was borr on the 14th of April 1714 in the parish of Muckhart, Perthshire and, on the completion of his literary and theological studice at Edinburgh and Perth, was licensed as a preacher in 1740 Principal publications: Tables for the Four Evangelists (1770, and with author’s name, 1800); The Present Truth, a Display of the Secession Testimony (2 vols., 1774); Vindiciae dominicae (Edin., 1780).
