The Welsh Quakers stood it all heroically and when William Penn offered them a haven of rest, they found an honorable way of escaping the trials which seemed practically endless. But they loved their old country; its language and customs, and a committee of them obtained from William Penn the offer of a Barony, where they could have a new Wales and, as they hoped a government of their own, unmixed with alien influences. Parable of the Sucky FTP Program is a personal favorite Main November 24, 2002 Better to listen than to talk Like I'm listening to Christopher Priest This nation has had a lot of experience with leaders who put saving face above saving the nation. Bill Clinton put this country through enormous pain and turmoil and, indeed, set the stage for this very scary man to succeed him, by simply not admitting, waaay back during Paula Jones's suit, that he'd had inappropriate conduct (if not quite legally provable sexual intercourse) with a White House intern. George Bush before him spent billions of dollars to bring us to Saddam's door and then turned and went home, and then proceeded to squander a 90% public approval rating to be beaten by an Arkansas governor we'd never heard of. Richard Nixon sentenced tens of thousands of teenage boys to die in the jungles of Southeast Asia because he wanted to win reelection in 1972 and because he didn't want to look bad, or be the first president to "lose" a war. We fought in Vietnam for a principle, to protect our values and our way of life from a tiny, impoverished nation that we pretended was the linchpin to Soviet world dominance so General Dynamics and Bell Helicopter could make a fortune. The piece is about our current President, and titled, "OJ Stupid." Nice shorthand phrase, that.

T HE J EWS It is stated in the "Family Visitor" that the society for meliorating the condition of the Jew, are now engaged in a negotiation for 20,000 acres of land in the "Genesee country," for a Jewish colony. Will the Jews work on it?
Note 1: "The American Society for Meliorating the Condition of the Jews" was founded by Elias Boudinot (author of the 1816 book A Star in the West) in New York on Feb. 8, 1820 (with Boudinot as its president) under the name of "Society for Evangelizing the Jews." The society applied for incorporation in the state of New York early in 1820 and a bill was presented to the New York Legislature for that purpose. In deference to the prominent Jewish journalist and politician, Mordecai M. Noah, the Legislature changed the society's name when it approved its incorporation (see M. M. Noah's editorial in the May 13, 1826 issue of his newspaper, The National Advocate).

An elite group of fanatics are currently plotting the nuclear destruction of the planet for their own bizarre and selfish ends. Old news? I do not refer to the arms race between the US and the USSR per se. For that is merely the means to The End for this Conspiracy whose goal is not merely political but metaphysical: the conflict not only of the USA vs. the USSR, but of Good vs. Evil, of God vs. the Devil. It sounds like something from some trashy paperback thriller that combines occultism with super-power espionage. Pictures form in the mind of sinister figures shrouded in hooded robes, plotting in grim whispers in torch-lit caverns. But the identities of these conspirators are no mystery. They are well known to anyone who has watched TV or read a newspaper within the last eight years. They are the preachers and politicians of the Christian Right. If you think that censoring books, records, and movies, outlawing abortion and homosexuality (if not

CHAPTER IX.
MORMONISM - ITS DOCTRINES, AND HOW IT ORIGINATED.
A SHORT time after the events narrated in the preceding chapter, it was arranged that Parson Hall and myself should hold another discussion at the Campbellite Chapel. Parson Hall did not want to meet me in the discussion, but be had to do so or lose his flock, as all the people had become interested in the subject of Mormonism.
We met at the appointed time, and chose two umpires to act as moderators of the meeting. The subject to be discussed was: "Are apostles, prophets, teachers, etc., together with the spiritual gifts spoketh of, as recorded by the Apostle Mark in his 16th chapter, necessary to be in the Church now as they were then? I took the affirmative, the Parson the negative; the discussion lasted six hours. In his closing speech Parson Hall became very abusive and denounced the Mormons to the lowest regions of darkness, and the Prophet, Joseph Smith, as a vile impostor. I replied to him and closed the discussion. It was agreed that the Old and New Testaments should be the only authorities to be quoted by us. The umpires refused to decide who had the best of the discussion. They said it rested with the people to decide for themselves. It was evident, however, that the people were with me. The principal topic of conversation was about this strange Mormon doctrine.
Parson Hall's flock was by no means satisfied with his course. He said this Mormon doctrine was the strongest Bible doctrine he ever heard of, and he feared the consequences of a further discussion of it. But this would not satisfy the people, who wanted to hear and learn more of it; so another discussion was agreed upon, in which Parsons Curlee and Nichols were to assist Parson Hall, and prompt him.

The Irish (in countries other than Ireland)
I. IN THE UNITED STATES Who were the first Irish to land on the American continent and the time of their arrival are perhaps matters of conjecture rather than of historical proof; but that the Irish were there almost at the beginning of the colonial era is a fact support by historical records. The various nations of Europe whose explorers had followed Columbus were alive to the possibilities of land conquest in the new continent. For this purpose colonists were needed, and expeditions were fitted out under government protection, which brought over the earliest settlers. England was especially active in promoting these expeditions, and during the seventeenth century, various colonies, beginning with that of Jamestown in 1607, were planted with immigrants, most of them of English nationality. Irish names, however, are met with occasionally in the documents relating to these settlements; it is certain that there were Irish Catholics in the Virginia Colony prior to 1633. In the narrative of the voyage of the Jesuit Father Jesuit missionaries of these times we find Fathers Carroll, Murphy, Hayes, Quinn, O'Reilly, Casey, and others whose names indicate their Celtic origin.
