This cemetery is maintained on a regular basis and is in fair shape. This cemetery is located within the city of Chaska, just north of the current highway 212 and along highway 41 (or Chestnut Street). The cemetery grounds are very old and the sod / grass has become very soft and thick. There were several ‘newer’ burial monuments that had sunken into the sod / grass and were barely visible. In the 1915 "Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota", edited by Maj. R.I. Holcombe and William H. Bingham, they wrote: ‘... Mount Pleasant Cemetery was acquired by the cemetery association of that name and surveyed by Lucien Warner in 1865.’ In "Chaska - A Minnesota River City, Volume I, The 1800’s", by the Chaska Bicentennial Committee, they wrote: ‘ ... The site of Mount Pleasant cemetery was apparently a local burial spot before the cemetery association was formed. While that is not certain, the area was referred to as "the old burying ground" which makes that implication. The cemetery association was formed in the spring of 1863. ... In December of the same year additional land was purchased for the cemetery. As a result, it then extended to the Chaska and Smithtown Road. A later 1865 survey indicated its area was nearly four acres. Within the first year the lots had been laid out, staked and were available for sale. A "new pine board fence" also enclosed its boundaries.’ (page 119-120)

In the 1915 "Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, Minnesota", edited by Maj. R.I. Holcombe and William H. Bingham, they wrote: ‘... The Catholic Church of the Guardian Angels was founded in 1858 ...’ (page 232) In "Chaska - A Minnesota River City, Volume I, The 1800’s", by the Chaska Bicentennial Committee, they wrote: ‘...At about the same time as the church was completed [1880’s?], the congregation acquired a new location for the cemetery. As late as 1881, a map shows the Catholic cemetery located along the present route of Highway 41 (about one mile north of Highway 212 on the west side of the road). Precisely when the first cemetery was established is uncertain, but when it closed the people who had been buried there were re-interred at the new location. Apparently (page 53) the soil conditions at the first site were very poor. Some 1877 remarks made about the first location do not indicate what the problem was. By 1882, however, the church had acquired the site which still serves the church.’ (page 55)

is located in the City of Siletz, former headquarters for the old Siletz Indian Reservation. This well-kept burial ground, located on a knoll known as Government Hill overlooking the present town site, has long served the Indian residents of the area. Beneath stately trees are buried hundreds of Siletz people. The oldest tombstone date is 1879, although the area is believed to have been in use in prior to that date. Formerly known as Siletz Cemetery, this native burial ground was renamed to honor Paul Washington after he was killed in France during World War I. Pfc. Washington, son of Hattie and Isaac Washington, died September 28, 1918. A double funeral was held May 24, 1919 for Paul and his brother Andrew after the latter died of tuberculosis in Denver as he was returning home from the war.
"Some years ago (1960's), I made a survey of Paul Washington when it was mostly brush," wrote consultant Leonard Whitlow II, a former U.S. History teacher at Grant High School in Portland. "I made extra effort to record every marked grave and knew there were lots unmarked. In fact Dorsey Streets told me that every time they dug a new grave up there, they dug into an existing grave."

This is an old cemetery and some of the stones very hard to read. In a few cases I used the information from the book "Of Grave Importance" by The Baxter County Historical Society - 1994. In some cases I've put information from an obituary, other wise the information is from the tombstones. In an undertaking like this there seems to always be mistakes. I apologize for missed stones and misspelled names. By: Vera (Lane) Reeves Acheson, Delia Meland (shares stone with Maj Robert) 10 Apr 1911 17 Jul 1979
