Sir Arthur S. Sullivan

The partnership between playwright William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) produced, between 1871 and 1896, fourteen comic operas. Some of them remain amongst the most popular of all stage musical productions: The Mikado The Pirates of Penzance H.M.S. Pinafore The Gondoliers and The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert was a barrister by profession, and many of his stories focus on themes of a legal nature. Even where the theme is not legal, Gilbert often introduced songs dealing with legal subjects. The object of this collection is to bring together those songs which are of most direct interest from a legal perspective.

Plays and Poems , edited by Deems Taylor ( Random House, 1935 ), contains three plays by Gilbert, all fourteen of the operas written in collaboration with composer Sir Arthur S. Sullivan, and The Bab Ballads . The following limits itself to the collaborations of Gilbert and Sullivan during their heyday, with the exception of the Bab Ballads , which show Gilbert's metrical skill and sense of humor and which first brought him to public notice. The Complete Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan , edited and introduced by Ian Bradley, was published by Oxford, 1996.

A USA Films release. 160 minutes. PG Delicious is the word for this labor of love and love for the theater. Delicious like a long, leisurely gourmet meal of "haute cuisine" which lasts for hours, has an unhurried pace, makes time pass most pleasurably, brings in course after course, and progresses with interesting conversations. Writer-director Mike Leigh has carved a special film-niche for himself with very British movies that reveal extraordinary things about ordinary working-class people: High Hopes, Life Is Sweet, Naked, Secrets and Lies, et al. He (and his actors) have been awarded a host of major prizes. And that's not counting Leigh's activities in the theater, and with TV films which also get theatrical releases. In Topsy-Turvy Leigh deals with the team of librettist W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) or Sir Arthur after he was knighted in 1883. There's also a third man, impresario-manager D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901).

The Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas
Our group is dedicated to performing the joint works of Sir W.S. Gilbert (1836-1911), playwright and humorist, and Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), unofficial composer laureate of England and favorite of Queen Victoria. Together they wrote a series of fourteen comic operettas (including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance , and The Mikado ) which were wildly popular in their own time and are still widely performed by amateur and professional groups today, over a hundred years after their creation. These operettas were the forerunners of our modern musicals, and in many ways resemble them more than they do the grand operas. Their songs and choruses mostly light and comic in nature are interspersed with spoken dialogue rather than recitative. In fact, few if any of the performers in Gilbert and Sullivan's original productions were professional opera singers; some of the chorus members were even outright amateurs. Though over a century old, the works of Gilbert and Sullivan are as fresh and sparkling today as the day they were written. Gilbert may have chosen specific aspects of Victorian society for his satire, but his wit is as relevant now as it ever was: "I always voted at my party's call / And I never thought of thinking for myself at all," sings Sir Joseph Porter in Pinafore , but the lines could as easily belong to most modern politicians.

The Story
The Story
COMIC opera in two acts; text by W. S. Gilbert; music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. First produced at the Savoy Theatre, London, March 14, 1885. First performance in the United States, July 6, 1885, at the Museum, Chicago. Sir William Schwenk Gilbert (1836-1911) Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) Not without reason is this one of the most popular of the long line of "Savoy Operas," for Gilbert's text is a masterpiece of comic writing to which Sullivan's ever tuneful music is perfectly adapted, serving in a remarkable manner to set off the amusing character of the words. The Japanese setting supplies a refreshingly colorful background, although, of course the characters are by no means Japanese, but the Victorian British in a very thin disguise. Mike Leigh's 1999 film Topsy-Turvy is an excellent dramatization of Gilbert and Sullivan's often troubled working relationship, and of how
