Prominent as a lecturer and writer on the labor movement and feminism, she edited the Forerunner, a liberal journal. Gilman continued writing after her happy remarriage to her cousin George Houghton Gilman in 1900. In 1932, she learned she had incurable breast cancer. Wanting to be in charge of her own death, she committed suicide with an overdose of chloroform on August 17, 1935. Charlotte Perkins Gilman Charlotte Perkins is born in Hartford, Connecticut to Fredrick Beecher Perkins, a librarian and magazine editor, and his wife, Mary Fitch Perkins. Fredrick Perkins leaves the family for prolonged periods of time. He sends Charlotte educational material to read. Fredrick Perkins divorces Mary Perkins. Charlotte marries Charles Walter Stetson (reluctantly). Charlotte gives birth to Katharine Beecher, after which she suffers from severe depression. She consults the noted neurologist S. Weir Mitchell, who prescribs his "rest cure" of complete bed rest and limited intellectual activity. She takes a trip to California. She leaves her husband, moving to Pasadena, California with her daughter and destitute mother. She begins writing poetry and short stories. She moves to San Francisco, where she edits feminist publications, assists in the planning of the California Women's Congresses of 1894-95, and helps to found the Women's Peace Party. Charlotte meets the social reformer Jane Addams, who invites her to spend several months at Hull House in Chicago, Illinois. Gilman then tours the United States and England lecturing on women's rights and on labor reform. She publishes Women in Economics , her best-known nonfiction work and "feminist manifesto." In the book Charlotte argues that women's secondary status in society, and especially their economic dependence on men, is not the result of biological inferiority but rather of culturally enforced behavior.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman Gilman's life was shaped by two principle circumstances of her family; one was their status as intellectuals and reformers (Harriet Beecher Stowe was Gilman's great-aunt, and her great-grandfather was the fmous minister Lyman Beecher, among other lesser luminaries) and the other was the instability of her nuclear family, with her mother's consequent unhappiness. The first encouraged Gilman to participate in the family tradition of progressive public works, while the second left her estranged from her father, and with an emotionall y distant mother. Gilman described her mother's system of child-rearing as deliberately "deny[ing] the child all expression of affection as far as possible, so that she should not be used to it or long for it." This had a naturally unhappy effect on Gilman, who was frequently visited by self-doubt and depression throughout her adult life. Gilman's first vocation was painting, by which she was able to maintain herself prior to her first marriage. Through art, in fact, she met her husband, the artist Walter Stetson. From early in the marriage, Gilman suffered from debilitating depression, and her symptoms only lessened when she was separated from her husband. She tried S. Weir Mitchell's rest cure, which, with its requirements that she never touch a pen or brush again, had an effect the reverse of heathful. Stetson's belief that Gilman should become less "selfish" - that is, wholly devoted to his service, rather than involved in the public welfare - exacerbated her mental troubles, particularly as she seems to have internalized his (and society's) prescription that wives should abnegate their individuality on the shrine of spousal devotion. Gilman wrote the novel in 1929, at the end of her long career as a writer and radical reformer. While best remembered for her haunting book The Yellow Wallpaper , she produced an impressive body of work, including her treatises Women and Economics and The Home ; the utopian fiction Herland ; her autobiography, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman ; poetry; and other novels. Unpunished explores Gilman's familiar theme of the social injustices suffered by women and anticipates contemporary concerns of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
