Books : By the Ionian Sea George Gissing
Introduction and Notes by Pierre Coustillas
"The names of Greece and Italy draw me as no others; they make me young again. The world of the Greeks and Romans is my land of romance."
In 1897 the Victorian novelist George Gissing undertook a brief but eventful journey in southern Italy. His itinerary took him from Naples to Reggio di Calabria, via Paola, Cosenza, Crotone and Squillace, through the area once known as Magna Graecia. Meditating on the vestiges of Greco-Roman civilization, Gissing visited tombs and temples, museums and cathedrals, in search of the imprint of antiquity and "that old world which was the imaginative delight of my boyhood." The result was By the Ionian Sea, first published in 1901. Gissing's journey by boat, train, and carriage revealed not just the ruined glories of a classical past, but also the hardships of rural life in turn-of-the-century rural Italy. Meeting poverty-stricken peasants and corrupt local officials, he endured discomfort, danger and illness in a remote and little visited corner of Europe. Yet throughout he appreciated the warmth and generosity shown to him by local people, curious about this solitary stranger. By turns lyrical and melancholic, Gissing's masterpiece of travel writing alternates between light and dark, life and death, Paganism and Christianity. Looking at Italy in both its classical and contemporary dimensions, By the Ionian Sea celebrates Calabria's rich cultural past and beautiful landscapes while providing a candid account of the region's hardship and poverty. More than a century after its first publication, this is the first critical edition of the book in English.

George Gissing's Letters: A Review
Peter Morton , Flinders University of South Australia
The Collected Letters of George Gissing . Ed. Paul F. Mattheisen, Arthur C. Young, and Pierre Coustillas. Volume one (1863-1880); Volume two (1881-1885). Athens, Ohio: Ohio University Press, 1990-1991. "Soup-stained copies borrowed from public lending libraries." Forty years ago, that was what George Orwell had to manage with when he was preparing his appreciative essay on the late-Victorian English novelist George Gissing (1857-1903). Some of his subject's best work, Orwell complained, was completely unprocurable. The position is very different today. All twenty-three of Gissing's novels are readily available with many of them in paperback, thanks to the surge in the reprinting of nineteenth-century texts which occurred in the 1970s. From this surge he benefited more than any other author except Thomas Hardy. Gissing's stocks have been rising steadily for a decade or more, and his canonical position as a novelist of the upper second rank seems to be assured now, as it certainly was not when Orwell wrote. There are two more reasons why the surviving biographical documents should interest us. One is the light they shed on Gissing's creative work, for disguised autobiography is close to the surface everywhere. V.S. Pritchett was surely right in saying that "one must look first and last at his personal life, for he was, excessively, a personal writer." The more we know of Gissing's life, one of the more bizarre lives in the annals of literature, the more we can appreciate the way in which experience was transformed into art in

ALBERT VICTOR, Prince, Duke of Clarence (1864-92)
Heir to the British throne until his premature death from influenza. First flagged as a "suspect" in an article by Dr Thomas Stowell in 1970. Generally features in a conspiracy theory in which he has illegally married a Catholic and had a child by her. Various leading Freemasons then crowd the scene to cover up the scandal, but they needn't have bothered, since any marriage taking place without the Monarch's consent would automatically be annulled under the Royal Marriage Act. The Court Circular also gives the Prince an impeccable alibi for the crimes.
ANDERSON, Sir Robert (1841-1918)
Senior Scotland Yard officer involved the case. The original "third man" in the conspiracy theory set out in Stephen Knight's Final Solution (106). Knight later substituted Walter Sickert for his role. Like much of the Knight theory, this is a pate re-working of another plot, in this case Agatha Christie's play The Mousetrap.
BARNARDO, Dr Thomas (1845-1905)

I often look for notice of amateur journalists and our hobby in odd places, and now my interest in English author George Gissing (1857-1903), has brought to my attention another such association, or at least I believe it has done so. My interest in Gissing first arose because his novel The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft (1903) was so beloved by H. P. Lovecraft that he told his wife, fellow amateur journalist Sonia (Greene) Lovecraft Davis (1883-1972), to read the book if she wanted to understand his opinions. Regrettably, I don't know if Lovecraft ever read Gissing's work beyond
