The style of writing is typically Gladstonian: convoluted and often unclear. This text is taken from Philip Magnus' Gladstone: a biography (London, John Murray, 1954), pp. 38-9. [Gladstone] was with the Glynnes by moonlight in the Colosseum on 3 January 1839; and he had then an opportunity to speak to Catherine, for a moment, alone. He began to speak of his love, but Catherine would not respond. She moved away, and Gladstone blamed himself bitterly; he feared that his hopes had all been ruined. He was inhibited by his repressions from folding the girl in his arms, and taking her by surprise, and by storm. He resolved, therefore, to trust to a letter, but he postponed writing it until 17 January, two days before he was due to return home. Its breathless and tortuous style bears witness to the tumult of his emotions. William Ewart Gladstone (1809 1898): his work with 'fallen women' Marjie Bloy Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow, National University of Singapore In January 1840 Gladstone first embarked on his work of rescuing and rehabilitating London prostitutes. Gladstone seems to have been a man of intense sexuality; he was also separated from his wife for lengthy periods while he was in London or she was at Hawarden. It was usually during these periods of separation that Gladstone's rescue work increased. HCG Matthew deals with this subject in his biography, Gladstone (Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1997), pp. 90-95, from which the following section is taken. Anxiety about his political work, his friends' religion, the Oak Farm finances, and his personal problems, aggravated Gladstone's feelings. At first, during the 1840s, he relieved them by reading what he regarded as pornography - mostly Restoration poems, classical authors such as Petronius, and fabliaux (French verse fables, some of them extremely bawdy). These were all readily available in bookshops and in the libraries of friends such as Thomas Grenville. To pornography he later added conversations with prostitutes, some of whom he found beautiful and physically attractive. Hotel, theater deals PRESS HERE William Ewart Gladstone 1809 - 1898 Famous Victorian reforming British Prime Minister who served four terms as and was MP for Greenwich. William Ewart Gladstone, the fourth son of Sir John Gladstone, was born in Liverpool on 29th December, 1809. Gladstone was a MP and a successful Liverpool merchant. William was educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford. At the Oxford Union Debating Society Gladstone developed a reputation as a fine orator. At university Gladstone was a Tory and denounced Whig proposals for parliamentary reform. Famous as Disraeli's rival and for their spirited debates, Gladstone had a long and distinguished career in public service which began in 1832 when he entered Parliament as a Tory (Conservative). Serving until 1895, except for a one year absence in 1846, he served in numerous governments beginning with Peel's ministry in junior capacities. Gladstone's first major office was that of President of the Board of Trade (Minister of Industry and Commerce) in Peel's second ministry (1841-46). He was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Minister of Finance) in Aberdeen's government, cutting duties and attempting to abolish income tax. His efforts failed due to the need for funds to carry on the Crimean War. He also served in Palmerston's second ministry (1859-65) again effecting tax reductions. When Palmerston died, Gladstone stayed on as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Russell through 1866. In 1867, he followed Russell as leader of the Liberal Party.
