27. Discussion Questions
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (18091852) is in many ways, the most modern writer we will read. His stories are full of verbal pyrotechnics

RSNST 225: MURDER, MADNESS, AND MAYHEM: XIXTH-CENTURY RUSSIAN LITERATURE This is a syllabus for roughly the first half of the course. I provide you with some basic information on each author and with a few questions to consider as we discuss. For specific assignments, refer to the "General Syllabus and Schedule of Assignments." Sept. 1: Introductions. Explanation of course goals and policies. Overview of Russian literature and culture up to Pushkin. Creation of a Russian literary language and its importance to Pushkin and others. Key Eighteenth Century figures: Vasily Kirillovich Trediakovsky (1703-1769), Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov (1711-1765), Aleksandr Petrovich Sumarokov (1718-1777), Denis Ivanovich Fonvizin (1744-1792), and Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin (1766-1826). Sept. 3: Pushkin, "Queen of Spades" As you will soon discover, Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin (1799-1837) is traditionally the most revered and most read Russian writer. Even today, most Russians you meet will be able to recite some verses from his poetry. His popularity, both among scholars and the general public, has never been translated into other countries. What does all of this suggest to you? Is the canon important to us today? What good are -isms anyway? For a variety of reasons, we will concentrate on his prose works. As you are reading these first stories, think about the idea of a national literature. Pushkin helped to create the image of a writer who is also a leading political, cultural, and ideological figure.

Monteleone, John (American playwright, March 2, 1956-), Diary of a Madman/Madwoman, a 75-minute monodrama (performance piece) adapted from the classic Russian short story " Zapiski sumasshedshego " published in 1835 by Nikolay Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) into English, set in a small room with simple furnishings, the present time, 1m or 1f script/rights available from John Monteleone , e-mail webmaster@hamptonswebdesign.com, P.O. Box 2723, Sag Harbor, New York 11963, telephone (home and work) 631-725-5251, Website www.johnmonteleone.com . Orders should specify preferred method of mail: (1) e-mail of an MS Word 6.0 document as an attached file, (2) regular mail. Cited by playwright via ftp, July 11, 1997; Monteleone says, Dramatis Persona Madman/Madwoman (m or f). Synopsis A man slowly slides downward from a clerical position in an indifferent government bureaucracy, downward to increasing delusions, for example, that a dog has the answers to his love concerns, that he is the King of Spain and a victim of the Inquisition (among other fantasies), that his final frantic hours are as an inmate in an insane asylum. Comment The action is on a raised platform set in the center of a larger area, sparsely furnished with a tiny writing table, a wood chair, a narrow mattress and a bedspring; all of which are used in a multitude of ways to create the different mental environments, times and places of the play's journey. Audiences have loved this powerful solo performance piece as have all the critics. For the premiere, the director and playwright worked hard to bring to life the diary, and used the set very creatively. All of their discoveries are in the text. This piece is difficult and demands full use of the actor's instrument, craft and artistry. It also offers great creative choices for the actor, director, and designers.

LIFETIME READING PLAN
Clifton Fadiman
Clifton Fadiman, who died in 1999 at the age of 95, was an editor, essayist, anthologist and broadcast personality. He was an editor and judge for the Book-of-the-Month Club for over 50 years. He wrote for the Encyclopedia Britannica as well as numerous magazines and compiled over two dozen anthologies on subjects ranging from mathematics to poetry to the pun. He became very well known appearing on the radio quiz show Information, Please! The Lifetime Reading Plan was first published in 1960; the second and third editions, with revisions and amplifications, appeared in 1978 and 1986. Finally, with the assistance of John S. Major, Clifton Fadiman prepared The New Lifetime Reading Plan (4th edition, 1998). The book is divided into 133 sections with each section devoted to an author and one or more of that author's books. The books are presented in chronological order and discussed in two or three pages each. This 4th edition addresses works of greater diversity than any of the earlier editions. The authors' write in the preface - "Because our country is more profoundly multicultural than ever, and also because it is to everyone's personal advantage to cast as wide a net as possible in harvesting the world's cultural riches, the works suggested...(here)... now include Lady Murasaki along with Jane Austen, Tanizaki cheek-by-jowl with Faulkner, Ssu-ma Ch'ien as well as Thucydides. We think these additions to the Plan will enhance both your pleasure and your sense of achievement as a reader."
