Samuel Johnson Although Oliver Goldsmith was a prolific and extremely popular writer in his lifetime, his childhood and young adulthood were unpromising. He was regarded by Mrs. Elizabeth Delap, a relative of young Oliver's and the proprieter of the school he attended, as "impenetrably stupid"(Siebert 152). Of his days at Trinity College in Dublin, one classmate remarked that "he exhibited no specimens of the genius which in his maturer years raised his character" (Siebert 152). Upon receiving his B.A. from Trinity in 1750, Goldsmith tried private tutoring, was rejected for candidacy for the priesthood, and flirted with the idea of immigrated to America before finally deciding to pursue a career in medicine in 1752. It is unclear whether or not he actually received a degree in medicine (he did practice briefly), but his studies did take him to continental Europe, where he spent two years. It was this time in Europe, particularly a tour of the continent in 1775, that provided the basis for Goldsmith's first great poem, "The Traveller". Upon returning to England, he again worked various jobs until accepting an offer to work as reviewer for the
