[Tibetan Manuscripts and Xylographic Books]
Bound volumes
Asian Division The Rockhill Collection of Tibetan books represents the oldest and most valuable collection of Tibetan materials in the Library of Congress's collections. It is comprised of 65 books, eight of which are manuscripts and 57 of which are xylographs. This collection was donated to the Library of Congress by Joseph Rockhill who had collected them during his term as U.S. Ambassador to China at the beginning of the 20th century. Treatment: Typical of Tibetan books, these books, no thicker than 1 cm., are made up of long, narrow, loose paper leaves. Keeping in mind the shelving issues specific to books of this format, conservators planned the housing for the whole collection. Shelving of the books is based on the numbers assigned to them by Mr. Rockhill. The boxes are stacked on top of each other with the short ends visible. To make an even, steady stack of boxes, all boxes were made of the same size and the inside of each box was fitted to the particular size of the book.

The Oliver Goldsmith Page
Major Works

The Citizen of the World ( 1760-61 ). Goldsmith puts criticism of English manners and mores into the letters written by a fictional Chinese gentleman, Lien Chi Altangi. This work shows the influence of Montesquieu's Persian Letters . One may well wonder where Goldy got the name Altangi.
The Traveler ( 1764 ). The traveler-narrator fails to find happiness abroad and concludes that it is to be found in one's own mind: " Our own felicity we make or find."
The Vicar of Wakefield On Line
The Deserted Village ( 1770 ). Nostalgic poem about the passing of a simpler, happier, rural past. On Line
The Life of Richard Nash ( 1762 ). Beau Nash, Master of Ceremonies at Bath, was an institution in Eighteenth Century England.
She Stoops to Conquer On Line from Bartleby.
Collected Letters . Edited by Katherine C. Balderston. Cambridge, 1928.

The son of an Irish clergyman, he was graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1749. He studied medicine at Edinburgh and Leiden, but his career as a physician was quite unsuccessful. In 1756 he settled in London, where he achieved some success as a miscellaneous contributor to periodicals and as the author of Enquiry into the Present State of Polite Learning in Europe (1759). But it was not until The Citizen of the World (1762), a series of whimsical and satirical essays, that he was recognized as an able man of letters. His fame grew with The Traveler (1764), a philosophic poem, and the nostalgic pastoral
