. "A child asleep"
Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on. Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace

Gordon History
The naming of Gordonville
T he naming of Gordonville situated on the upper Bellinger River inland from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, where children of Ann Gordon's son Henry established themselves as the first settlers in the 1860s, likely had its origin in the history of one of colony’s most important early institutions - the Parramatta Female Factory . Ann Gordon was its longest serving Matron and during her nine year tenure of office the institution became colloquially known as Gordon Ville . Its function has been described thus : The Parramatta Female factory was .... an attempt to provide, in the one institution, the solution to all the problems posed to the colonial administration by the women of colonial society ... the Female Factory was not only a goal, but a house of asylum and probation, a home for the incapacitated (infirm, aged, blind, nursing mothers), a labour exchange, a marriage bureau, a hospital and a manufactory. The factory buildings shown above were designed by the convict architect Francis Greenway. Surrounded by a 16 ft. high wall and a moat it was the destination upon arrival for convicted women transported to the colony

by David M. Zajic Academic Festival Overture, op. 80 Johannes Brahms (1833-1896) Composed: 1880 Premiered: January 4, 1881 Johannes Brahms received a thorough musical education in his youth, but his course of study never included a college experience. He studied composition and piano privately as a child-and it’s not every wunderkind who can claim to have played the bordellos of Hamburg by the age of thirteen. By 1850 Brahms had developed enough of a local reputation as a pianist to become the accompanist to the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi. In 1853, Brahms and Reményi embarked on a concert tour of Germany that eventually took them to Hanover, where Brahms attracted the attention of Joseph Joachim. At 21, Joachim was already established as a major violin virtuoso, and he was to become one of Brahms’s closest friends. When Brahms parted company from Reményi shortly thereafter, it was to Joachim that he turned. He spent two months with Joachim in Göttingen, auditing courses in philosophy and history at the University. This was Brahms’s closest approach to college life as a student. Thus it is not so shocking that in 1877, when Cambridge University wished to offer him an honorary doctorate, Brahms’s desire for academic recognition was outweighed by his distaste for travel and publicity. Two years later, Brahms accepted an honorary doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Breslau, and expressed his gratitude by composing the
