Korzenie literatury australijskiej
Snuj±c rozwa¿ania na temat literatury australijskiej musimy pamiêtaæ ¿e jest to bardzo m³oda literatura, wrêcz szczeniêca. Historia pañstwowo¶ci Zwi±zku Australijskiego (Commonwealth of Australia) to zaledwie sto lat, oczywi¶cie pisarze i poeci tworzyli tu i przed powstaniem oficjalnego pañstwa. Za pocz±tek literatury australijskiej mo¿emy przyj±æ datê pierwszej publikacji poezji na tej ziemi w roku 1819, czyli oko³o 180 lat temu. Gwoli ¶cis³o¶ci, by³ to tomik pt. First fruits (Pierwsze owoce), autorstwa Barrona Fieldÿa. W miarê up³ywu czasu, kiedy kolonie karne zaczê³y zmieniaæ swój charakter a nowi emigranci przybywali z w³asnej woli sytuacja zaczê³a siê poprawiaæ. Wprowadzono powszechne szkolnictwo. A oprócz gor±czki z³ota, która rozpala³a umys³y tak¿e w tym kraju, zaczêli pojawiaæ siê ludzie oddani literaturze.

86. Birds! Catalogue 1
Songless Bright Birds. In 1870, Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833–1870) wrote of Australianlands 'where bright blossoms are scentless, / And songless bright birds'.
http://www.nla.gov.au/exhibitions/birds/catalogue1.html
Catalogue Essay Songless Bright Birds In 1870, Adam Lindsay Gordon (1833 1870) wrote of Australian lands 'where bright blossoms are scentless, / And songless bright birds'. This common colonial prejudice could not long defy what people actually heard in the bush. Yet the predatory activities of visitors and settlers quickly created an actual 'songlessness' in the spreading, colonised lands. In the first starvation years of invasion, many birds, like the abundant mutton bird on Norfolk Island, were simply eaten out. Many admired birds were destroyed by their admirers' mania for imported field-sports and competitive, lucrative collection. The Kangaroo Island and Macquarie Island emus were extinct before John Gould's Birds of Australia 1848) was published. Early colonial bird sketches record the naturalists' fascination with the marvellous southern birds, and show that Australian animals, along with the land and its sovereign people, were invaded. Birds were shot, collected, sketched, stuffed and shipped home as specimens of science by the invaders. Ships returning to England and its insatiable collection trades carried, even into our own century, countless cargoes of songless bright birds. And Human Bones Every 'bird in the hand' mirrored the enduring attempt to silence the historic songlines of the world's oldest human culture. 'Enlightened' European greed for an exploitable new world did not, as several works in the exhibition make clear, distinguish between human and animal domains. The whole country seemed one vast repository of specimens.

"Horse" Quotations for All Occasions
April 28, 2001
From the NIV Compact Bible, Job 39:19-25
(return to Table of Contents) Do you give the horse his strength
or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?
Do you make him leap like a locust,
striking terror with his proud snorting?
He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength,
and charges into the fray.
He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing:
he does not shy away from the sword.
The quiver rattles against his side,
along with the flashing spear and lance.
In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds. At the blast of the trumpet he snorts, 'Aha!' He catches the scent of battle from afar, the shout of commanders and the battle cry
From Equine Expressions by Robbee Huseth:
(return to Table of Contents) Think, when we talk of horses, that you see them Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth.

http://www.rodwell.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/poets.htm
Poets Whether these were named after poets is not proved. Chaucer Road, is the most obvious. Geoffrey Chaucer lived 1340-1400? Addison maybe named after Joseph Addison, poet from 1672-1719 Gordon proved more tricky. However, Lord Byron was George Gordon but surely they would have called it Byron Road. Maybe obscure poets was the order of the day. Then I found Adam Lindsay Gordon 1833 1870. He has the distinction of being the only Australian poet to be honoured with a bust in poets corner in Westminster abbey I wondered if Dangan was a poet. Having lived in the road this always puzzled me. Some people assume he was a poet but I can find no account of a poet called Dangan. I think I have found a Dangan though and this is detailed else where. Look back at the main strret menu.
