Review
The Unreliable Genius
By Janet Malcolm
by Ann Thwaite
University of Chicago Press, 567 pp., $25.00 Life, after dealing him an unspeakable blow at the age of seven with the death of his mother, was very good to Edmund Gosse; but posterity has not been kind to him. T.S. Eliot, Evelyn Waugh, and Virginia Woolf (among others) have left memorably snotty epithets. Eliot, reviewing Evan Charteris's official biography, The Life and Letters of Sir Edmund Gosse , in the Criterion in 1931, wrote: The full text of this piece is only available to subscribers of the Review 's electronic edition . Sir Edmund William Gosse
(1849 - 1928) U.K.
Critic and scholar Son of Philip Henry Gosse, eminent marine biologist and fanatical fundamentalist Christian, who was a member of the Olymouth Brethren. Gosse's strict Victorian upbringing is reflected in his masterpiece of autobiographical work Father and Son (published anonynously in 1907). It is, in Gosse's own words, "the record of a struggle between two temperaments, two consciences and almost two epochs". Gosse worked as a transcriber at the British Museum, then in 1875 became a translator st the Board of Trade. He made early acquaintance with the Pre-Raphaelites. Much of his early critical work was devoted to Scandinavian literature and he was the first to introduce Ibsen's name to England. A successful lecture tour of Amerivca in 1884-5 was followed by Churton Collin's attack on his published lectures From Shakespeare to Pope , an indictment of his carelessness which shadowed the rest of his life. His books include lives of Gray (1882), Congreve (1888), Jeremy Taylor (1904), Patmore (1905), Ibsen (1907), and Swinburne (1917), as well as collections of poems and critical essays. From 1904 to 1919 he was librarian of the House of Lords and exercised considerable power and influence. He was knighted in 1925

    DAVRAY MSS.
The Davray mss., 1896-1936, consist primarily of letters from British author Sir Edmund William Gosse, 1849- 1928, to the French writer and translator, Henry Durand Davray, 1873-1944, as well as a few from Gosse's wife and children. Topics covered in the letters provide a panorama of Anglo/French literature as Gosse comments on Gide, Proust, Henry James, Hardy, Kipling, and many others. Davray translated Gosse's Father and Son, as well as some of his articles, so that several of the letters discuss questions of translation, while a handful between 1914 and 1917 describe war happenings. In addition to the Gosses, other correspondents present in the collection include Arnold Bennett, William Henry Davies, William Heinemann, and Herbert George Wells. There is also a photocopy of a fragment of a speech Gosse gave in France in 1904, and two brief, undated manuscripts in Gosse's hand that are possibly summaries of lectures or addresses delivered by Gosse about the relationship and interaction of French and English literature. Purchase. M. Sabbagh. Paris, France. 1997
