Myrand, Louis(1824 - ) mother: Equay, Madeline Bah Be Dash(1828 - ) This is the information just rec from Lyn Bement. Marian: Sorry - I forgot you had told me you had already contacted Dennis BeMent! I finally re-looked through my files and discovered pages from a pamplet I had rec'd from a Jim Bement, Seattle WA, in December 1988. I don't even remember how I located him. The address I had for him then was: Jim Bement, 1218 SW 158, Seattle, WA 98166; phone: (home) 244-2491; (work) 931-5893 This pamplet is entitled "Waubun, Minnesota, Chippewa's Rising Sun," written by Mrs. Donald (Blanche Fabre) McDonald of Waubun, Mahnomen Co., MN, in 1960. Waubun was originally named "Bement" - after Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bement! There is even a picture of them! Mr. Bement and family moved there in 1904 from White Earth, MN. He built a hotel in Waubun just before the railroad arrived. The village site "consisted of an 80-acre tract of land belonging to a minor girl of Indian descent, she being the daughter of the only settler there at the time. Her maiden name was Ethel Bement, now Mrs. Ingvald (Red) Williamson." Pamphlet indicates that she was Thomas Bement's daugher.

John Shaw Collection Notes on Authors As he built his collection, John Shaw compiled a large number of notes concerning the authors of children's materials and poetry. These notes were primarily biographical in nature and were sometimes used to justify the inclusion of a certain author in the Collection. This finding aid is a valuable tool in identifying a large portion of the authors whose works are included in the Shaw Collection. The Shaw Collection is in the process of being cataloged, and many of the works of the authors listed below are at the present moment uncataloged. As works are cataloged, this finding aid will be updated to provide the user with the call number of materials representative of a certain author. Beside each author's entry below, a call number will appear preceded by "CL" The notes included in this collection are arranged alphabetically by author's last name or by subject. To find a particular author quickly, use the Find or equivalent command that is common in most web browsers. Shaw Box 1605 Folder 1

  • Andrews, J. R. H. THE SOUTHERN ARK Zoological Discovery in New Zealand 1769-1900
*** The Southern Ark surveys 130 years of discovery, description and illustration of New Zealand's unique fauna. It begins with the voyages of Captain Cook and concludes at the end of the Victorian era.
The fauna was not as large or as exotic as that of some countries, but the Kiwi, the Moa, the Takahe and the Tuatara attracted maximum attention from scientists and public alike and leading nineteenth century naturalists took part in the description of New Zealand species.
John Andrews integrates the writings of Sir Joseph Banks, Sir Richard Owen, the Reverend Richard Taylor, and numerous resident collectors with the fine illustrations of Parkinson, Forster, Lear, Gould, Wolf, Martyn, Keulemans and Donovan. He shows the trials and tribulations of some of the early naturalists and artists, the ways in which they collected and preserved their material, and the ways in which they described and illustrated it.
Abundant illustrations give a clear picture of the technique and progression of natural history art.
