A to B C to E F to I J to L M to O P to R S to T U to Z Kenneth Grahame Born: 8 March 1859, Edinburgh Died: 6 July, 1932 Page 3 What the author said: "Vitality - that is the test; and, whatever its components, mere truth is not necessarily one of them. A dragon, for instance, is a more enduring animal than a Pterodactyl. I have never yet met anyone who really believed in a Pterodactyl; but every honest person believes in dragons - down in the back-kitchen of his consciousness." What others said: "I recall one day, wandering round Cookham and Marlow, his stopping on a wee bridge and endeavouring to call the attention of someone, or something, by a most alluring whistle. But there was no response. After several calls he gave it up remarking: 'There's a Water Rat down there, at least, it's his home; he's quite a friend of mine. Evidently he's gone on some excursion - I shall hear about it some day" (C Fairbanks who stayed with the Grahame family) "The book for me is notable for its intimate sympathy with nature and for its delicate expression of emotions. When all is said the boastful, unstable Toad, the hospitable Water Rat, the shy, wise, childlike Badger, and the Mole with his pleasant habit of brave boyish impulse, are neither animals nor men, but are types of that deeper humanity which sways us all."

As a rule, indeed, grown-up people are fairly correct on matters of fact; it is in the higher gift of imagination that they are so sadly to seek. It is the restrictions placed on vice by our social code which makes its pursuit so peculiarly agreeable. "Well, well, perhaps I am a bit of a talker. A popular fellow such as I am my friends get round me we chaff, we sparkle, we tell witty stories and somehow my tongue gets wagging. I have the gift of conversation. " The strongest human instinct is to impart information, the second strongest is to resist it.

The Wind in the Willows (E)
“A book for those who keep the spirit of youth alive in them; of life, sunshine, running water, woodlands, dusty roads, winter firesides” said author Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) about his children’s book The Wind in the Willows . Initially, he wrote the stories about Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad to read to his visually handicapped son Alistair, but after the publication in book form in 1908, it became a worldwide success. It was later also turned into a film and a television series. What appeals to me most is the friendly, very cosy atmosphere that Grahame has managed to create with his optimistic narrative style full of high spirits, an atmosphere that reminds me of my own carefree youth. It was therefore a great pleasure to set this book to music! The four movements successively describe: I) The River The river, which flows through the habitat of the animals like a lifeline, regularly is the scene of pleasant boat trips and picnics. The animals lead their untroubled lives here. The four-tone main motif [A-C-D-C] is extensively presented by the brass section, and returns in the following movements as a countermelody.
