Ulysses Simpson Grant
The best evidence of the changes that had occurred in warfare from Jomini to Clausewitz can be found in the campaigns of Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The latter was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Ohio but through confusion at West Point he became Ulysses Simpson Grant. Appointed to the military academy, he found it distasteful and hoped that Congress would abolish the institution, freeing him. He excelled only in horsemanship for that he had displayed a capability early in life and graduated in 1843, 2lst out of 39 graduates. Posted to the 4th Infantry, since there were no vacancies in the dragoons, he served as regimental quartermaster during most of the Mexican War. Nonetheless he frequently led a company in combat under Zachary Taylor in northern Mexico.
He came to greatly admire his chief but was transferred with his regiment to Winfield Scott's army operating from the coast. He received brevets for Molino del Rey and Chapultepec. With the resumption of peace he was for a time stationed in Mexico, a country which he came to admire greatly, and then was posted to the West coast. Separated from his wife, he tried numerous business ventures to raise enough capital to bring her to the coast but proved singularly unsuccessful. On July 31, 1854, he resigned his captaincy amid rumors of heavy drinking and warnings of possible disciplinary action by his post commander.
His return to civilian life proved unsuccessful. Farming on his father-inlaw's land was a failure, as was the real estate business and attempts to gain engineering and clerk posts in St. Louis. He finally became a clerk in a family leather goods store in Galena, which was run by his two younger brothers. Before he had been there long the Civil War broke out. Offering his services to the War Department and to General George B. McClellan in Ohio, he met with no success in gaining an appointment.

Hiram Ulysses Grant
Supreme Comander for the Union forces
"The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike at him as hard as you can, and keep moving on."
After the Mexican War Grant married Julia Dent. In the span of ten years they had 4 kids while Grant was stationed at different forts until he was stationed in The west coast without his family because of financial reasons. He was miserable in California. He was a very heavy drinker at this time and he had no money to bring his family with him. He would always argue with his commanding officers which would be why he was made to resign. His highest rank was captain. After he resigned he went back with his family and settled on some land to farm and live out his life. This plan was abruptly stopped when the Civil War broke out. He was loyal to the Union so he applied as an officer.
Grant was put in charge of the 21st Illinios volunteer regiment. He showed these rebellious troops the art of warfare and fighting. Since he showed his great leadership ability he was made brigadier general for Cairo, Illinios. Grant continued to show leadership ability by winning his first battle. He then got promoted again to major general of volunteers. The battle of Shiloh would be the haulting point of his momentum. He didn't fortify his position and suffered severe casualties. Abraham Lincoln was pressed to remove Grant but would not do so.

Misquotations
Education: West Point
Occupation: soldier, businessman
Political Affiliation: Republican
Religious Affiliation: Methodist?
Summary of Religious Views:
Grant is often listed as a Methodist, but Franklin Steiner asserts that, although his wife was Methodist, and he sometimes accompanied her to church services, Grant himself never joined any church. Here is what James L. Crane, Chaplain under Grant's first Civil War command, had to say about Grant's religious views: "Grant belongs to no church organization, yet he entertains and expresses the highest esteem for all the enterprises that tend to promote religion. When at home he generally attended the Methodist Episcopal church, with which some of the members of his family were connected. While he was colonel of the Twenty-first Regiment he gave every encouragement and facility for securing a prompt and uniform observance of religious services, and was generally found in the audience listening to preaching."
Grant was a strong supporter of the separation of church and state, especially in the area of education.

Biography

Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham LINCOLN staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations. Early Years Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, and baptized Hiram Ulysses. The eldest son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant, he came from a family that, he proudly declared, had been American "for generations, in all its branches, direct and collateral." In 1823 his father moved his tanning business to Georgetown, Ohio, where "Lyss" spent his boyhood. His education at a grammar school in Georgetown, at Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Ky., and at the Presbyterian Academy of Ripley, Ohio, was superficial and repetitious, and the boy showed no scholarly bent. He became noted, however, for his sturdy self-reliance and for his ability to ride and control even the wildest horses.

Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Grant, Ulysses S. Army general, president (1822-1885) Born and raised in Ohio, he graduated from West Point in 1843 with an unexceptional record. He served in the Mexican War (1846-1848), reaching the rank of captain by war's end. Over the next six years, he served at a series of quiet, isolated Western outposts before retiring from the military in 1854. Already a notorious heavy drinker, he settled in Missouri and took up farming, but soon found himself restless and unhappy. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant returned to military command in the Union forces. Soon promoted to general, he became known for his aggressive drives through enemy territory while suffering high casualty rates. In 1864, Lincoln made him commander of all Union forces, and he oversaw the final defeat of the Confederacy the following year.
Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) Grant afterwards became secretary of war under president Johnson. Being a popular war hero made him a prime presidential candidate, and in 1868 he ran and won on the Republican ticket. However, his military prowess did not translate well to the demands of political leadership. One historian writes, "As president, he was out of his element; a cabinet of cronies and political contributors proved largely incompetent and corrupt, and Grant had no overall vision for the country." Nonetheless, he gained reelection in 1872, and almost gained a third nomination in 1880 before retiring to write his memoirs.

18th President of the United States, Colonel of Illinois volunteers at outbreak of Civil War, promoted several times, eventually to Lieutenant General with command of all armies of the United States during the Civil War. His brilliant leadership and relentless attacks brought down the Confederate defenses. Grant is famous for receiving Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House.
ALS, "U.S. Grant", 2pp., written on first and 3rd 8vo. sheet, Washington DC, Jan. 5, 1885. This holograph letter to Hon. V. H. Manning M.C., introduces Mr. Theo Smith, "A relative of a former Commissioner of Indian affairs.." he continues, "Mr. Smith wishes to call your attention to a bill which is now in the house, having passed the Senate which he is interested in...May I ask an interview for Mr. Smith." The current president, Chester A. Arthur, was dealing with several Indian issues at the time of this writing which could be the focus of this letter. Possibly an issue that had already passed the senate dealing with Creek and Seminole Indians, certain unoccupied lands, were subject to homestead by settlers. It was the government's feeling that these lands were to remain open and the public had no right to settle there. The issue directed the expulsion of those settlers by the use of military force, confirming a proclamation previously issued by R.B. Hayes. Assuming Grant was in agreement, that the treaties made with the Indians should be maintained, he requests an interview for Mr. Smith. Excellent.

In the 1800's, the United States was divided over the issue of slavery. In the North, abolitionists were against slavery. In the South, plantation owners were in favor of slavery. The issue of slavery played an important role when a new state was admitted into the Union. Would the new state enter as a free state and not allow slavery or would the new state enter as a slave state and allow slavery?
