Named after his father in a town named after his grandfather, Zanesville, Ohio, Pearl Zane Grey was born to be a great man. He would grow to be an athletic young man that served as an apprentice to his father, while showing incomparable talent in baseball, which gained him a scholarship to college. He would later focus all of his energy on writing, a life long passion. At this he would excel and gain world-renowned status in all media. Along with writing about the Wild West, he fished for the wild fish of the world, from inner America to beyond the outer reaches of civilization. He would die an accomplished man of the pen, and of the fishing rod, holding titles from top seller to heaviest tuna. Zanesville, Ohio, named his grandfather, was the birthplace of Pearl Zane Gray. It was on the 31st of December 1872, that the "inventor" of the "Wild West" was born to Lewis Gray, a dentist, a farmer, and a preacher as well. Born the second boy of five children, Pearl would change his name in the 1890's by dropping Pearl and changing the spelling of his last name from "Gray" to "Grey." This young, athletic, spirit would grow up in Ohio with the wilderness at his back porch. It was in the Muskingum River that the six-year-old Gray would first see a live fish. The sight captured the mind of the young child, and, for the rest of his life, would intrigue him, and draw him to the outer limits of civilization, and beyond.

Biography Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on January 31, 1872. Grey was a descendent of the Zane family who settled Ohio and founded the town of Zanesville. In his youth, he loved the sport of baseball and later played semi-professionally. He attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship and majored in dentistry. His efforts towards dentistry were only half-hearted due to his great desire to write. This ambition was so great he had enough discipline to teach himself how to write. After he realized his talent, he got a publisher who knew a bestseller when he saw one. He married Lina Roth in 1905. Zane and Dolly had three children together: Romer, Betty, and Loren. For the first half of the nineteenth century - and again from the late 1800s to the 1950s - the road to adventure was the National Road, America's first federal highway. After five years of extensive surveying, road crews began to cut through the forests to clear a sixty-six-foot right-of-way. He was athletic all his life and received a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in dentistry in 1896. He played amateur baseball before opening a dental practice in New York City in 1898. He spent much time, however, in rural Lackawaxen PA, where he met young Lina Elise Roth, whom he called 'Dolly'. She encouraged him to write; his first published article appeared in 1902; he self-published the historical novel "Betty Zane" in 1903. He and Dolly were wed in 1905; their honeymoon trip in 1906 was Zane's first visit to the West. H is first Western novel, "The Heritage of the Desert" (1910) was a success, followed by his best-known work, "Riders of the Purple Sage" in 1912. By 1915, he had 15 books in print. But despite his successes the works of Zane Grey have often languished in the annals of folk art, widely condemned as kitsch popular and unrealistic. And by the 60’s Grey was considered a cliché of the over romanticized wild wild west. This popular appeal, which prompted critic T.K. Whipple to call Grey a natural “maker of the sagas of the folk,” was known even in his time and Grey himself embraced it, wanting to take his readers along for the adventure.
