    "The House of Cæsar"
Sprague de Camp, in 1966, suggested that the second line was a paraphrase from Ernest Dowson's (q.v.) "Non sum qualis eram bonae sub regno Cynarae" (or "Cynara"), the last stanza of which contains the phrase, "But when the feast is finished and the lamps expire," and this came to be the accepted derivation. However, Garvin's poem seems much likelier, and since it is little known, it is printed in entirety here: THE HOUSE OF CÆSAR Yea — we have thought of royal robes and red. Had purple dreams of words we utterèd; Have lived once more the moment in the brain That stirred the multitude to shout again. All done, all fled

Lackawaxen always held a special place in his memories, and was chosen as the site of his final resting place. Today, Grey's home from 1914-18 is preserved by the National Park Service as part of Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Guided Museum Tours The National Park Service provides ranger-conducted 20-minute tours of the rooms that were Zane Grey's study and office. Zane Grey's West Society
Where to Start by Charles G. Pfeiffer Back to main menu. Friends have often asked for advice in reading Zane Grey. I have been reluctant to comply because I have doubted my own competency, and because I am aware of the vast differences in individual tastes. Also, memories connected with a first reading or with tracking down the locale of a story inevitably color my judgment and blind me to the worth, or lack of it, of a given story.
Geography has been my interest; but, as I studied the books for geographic clues I became involved with the stories and their themes and came to have favorites. Geography, story, and meaning - not literary merit - are the basis of my ratings. I have tried to include materials which will make possible different approaches to Grey's works. There is a centerfold map to facilitate reading books geographically. The numbers of the alphabetized lists of romances correspond to the numbers on the map; the dates in brackets are the dates of writing and make possible a chronological reading. The unenclosed date is that of publication - if you choose to read the books in the order in which they were published. When Grey died in 1939 (1872 - 1939), Harper had such a backlog of books that it was about 20 years before they were all published, so sometimes the two dates are far apart. To make it easier to read Grey topically, various subjects have been noted; the books in each group are arranged in the order of their importance. All the sequels have been grouped together to make it possible to read them in their proper order.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Zane Grey (1872-1939) - original name Pearl Grey Prolific American writer and pioneer of Western as a new literary genre. Grey produced over sixty books, and almost as many have been published posthumously. In his works Grey presented the West as a moral battle ground, in which his characters are destroyed because of their unableness to change or redeemed through a final confrontation with their past. Grey's semioutlaw heroes were his most interesting creation, among them Lassiter in RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE (1912), a gunman who has lost a girl he loved to a Mormon preacher, and Buck Duane, the agonized killer of LONE STAR RANGER (1915). Randolph Scott played a former outlaw in Fritz Lang's film Western Union (1941), based on Grey's novel. Grey's stories, set against the beautiful but harsh landscape of the West, have fascinated readers all over the world. "Slingerland hated the railroad, and he could not see as Neale did, or any of the engineers or builders. This old trapper had the vision of the Indian - that far-seeing eye cleared by distance and silence, and the force of the great, lonely hills. Progress was great, but nature unspoiled was greater. If a race could not breed all stronger men, through its great movements, it might better not breed any, for the bad over-multiplied the good, and so their needs magnified into greed. Slingerland saw many shiningbands of steel across the plains and mountains, many stations and hamlets and cities, a growing and marvelous prosperity from timber, mines, farms, and in the distant end - a gutted West."
