The Grimm brothers were dismissed from their positions at Göttingen when Ernest Augustus, duke of Cumberland, became king of Hanover in 1837. Feeling that the constitution of 1833 was too liberal, the new King repealed it and dismissed the Grimms after they (along with five other professors later called the "Göttingen Seven") sent him a note explaining their loyalty to the old constitution.

Index Shades Index Fiary Tales Sources Guestbook Grimm Brothers Two 19th-century German scholars and brothers, who were leaders in the study of philology and folklore. Their names were Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859). Both brothers were born in Hanau—Jacob on January 4, 1785, and Wilhelm on February 24, 1786—and they were educated at the University of Marburg. Jacob was primarily a scientific philologist, having become interested at the university in medieval literature and the scientific investigation of language. Wilhelm was more a textual and literary critic. After several years in diplomatic and library posts in Kassel, the brothers went in 1830 to the University of Göttingen, where Wilhelm became a librarian and Jacob a lecturer on ancient law, literary history, and philosophy. For political reasons, the brothers returned to Kassel in 1837. In 1841, at the invitation of Frederick William IV of Prussia, they settled in Berlin, where they remained for the rest of their lives as teachers at the university. Wilhelm died December 16, 1859; Jacob died September 20, 1863.

Jacob et Wilhelm Grimm Les frères philologues Les frères Jacob (1785-1863) et Wilhelm (1786-1859) Grimm, que la postérité a indissociablement lié au point de n’en faire qu’un dans l’esprit commun, l’ont été dans leur vie comme dans leur œuvre. Leur attachement mutuel de remonte à leur plus tendre enfance. Leurs parcours respectifs ne cessent de se croiser. Ils poursuivent tous deux des études de droit à l’université de Marburg et partagent le même réseau d’amis, parmi lesquels Arnim et Clemens Brentano. Unis dans leur volonté d’exhumer les contes du passé, ils publient en 1812 à quatre mains leurs fameux Kinder und Haus- Märchen . Leur étroite collaboration scientifique et littéraire se poursuit dans les années suivantes avec la publication des Chants de l’Edda (1815), des Légendes allemandes (1816-1818), des Runes allemandes (1821) et des Contes irlandais (1826). En 1829, on les retrouve tous deux travaillant à la bibliothèque de Göttingen, en 1838 à Cassel, trois ans plus tard à Berlin. Plus encore que leurs contes qui font pourtant leur succès, leur entreprise monumentale commune demeure le Dictionnaire allemand sur lequel ils travaillèrent jusqu’à la fin de leur vie. Arrêté à la lettre F, le dictionnaire a été poursuivi depuis et achevé en 1960 grâce à la collaboration de plusieurs générations de germanistes. Dans leur préface des Contes d'enfants et du foyer, publiés en 1812, ils exposent leur démarche de collecte. [ ] Au début nous avons cru que, dans ce domaine aussi, bien des choses avaient disparu et que seuls demeuraient les contes dont nous-mêmes avions connaissance et que d'autres narraient avec des variantes comme il arrive toujours. Mais, attentifs à tout ce qui subsiste vraiment de la poésie, nous avons aussi désiré connaître ces variantes, et alors un grand nombre de nouveaux contes sont apparus. Der Vater hatte es noch so bestimmt. Wilhelm sollte dieses Studium abschließen, Jacob nicht. In Marburg wirkte der Einfluss ihres Lehrers Prof. Friedrich Carl von Savigny ab 1803 prägend auf beide Brüder: in Bezug auf ihr wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und durch die Kontakte und Beziehungen, die sich für die Grimms ergaben.

The tales were collected and written down as early as the fourth century B.C. The Fables were one of the first books printed; an Italian edition of 1474 still exists. While not specifically written for children, their brevity and wit quickly captured the imagination, and their morals made adults view them as appropriate for young people. In addition to the fables and the morals, L'Estrange added "reflections" which further discussed the moral issues involved in the stories. The Fables of Aesop, and others . Newcastle: Printed by E.
