An organic history of Territorial Seed Company Territorial's history in organic agriculture runs very deep within our company. From the very first seed catalog that was published in 1979, Territorial's founder, Steve Solomon, stressed the benefits of growing organically. The cultural information for each vegetable section was packed with information on how to use soil amendments such as rock phosphate, blood meal, bone meal, cotton seed meal, and the like. Territorial's Complete Organic Fertilizer Recipe became famous in the Northwest, a simple and practical approach to helping gardeners become more independent and self-sufficient for their own good tasting fresh-from-the-garden-food, without chemicals! At the time, outside of Robert Rodale's publications, this type of information was scarce, and no other seed companies at that time were giving organics much consideration. Territorial's message about organic gardening connected with enthusiastic gardeners looking for alternatives to chemicals, and this created demand for those organic materials mentioned above. In addition to founding Territorial Seed Company, Steve also wrote probably the most popular vegetable gardening book ever sold in the Northwest, Growing Organic Vegetables West of the Cascades. And although Steve's involvement in Oregon Tilth was for a short time, he does share the honor of being a founding organizer and member of Oregon Tilth. His research standards are those of a true academic, yet his writing and general presentation of the material is accessible, non formulaic and for a book of this nature, subtly novelesque. I headed straight for the chapter on Sir Albert Howard's composting methods at Indore in the 1930's and wasn't disappointed - fascinating reading. Also especially interesting was the chapter on vermicomposting. Steve doesn't seem to add material just for the sake of it unless it meets his rigorous criteria.
