Summer Reading at Your SCC Library Fire Readers of Sebastian Junger's first work, The Perfect Storm , will be more than happy to see that he has been at it again. This time, in Fire, Junger presents a series of essays dealing with "people confronting situations that could easily destroy them." Included are chapters on fighting fires in Idaho forests, hunting whales with Caribbean Islanders, diamond smuggling in Sierra Leone and ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Most intriguing is a report of the time Junger spent in Afghanistan with Ahmad Shah Massoud, the charismatic leader of the anti-Taliban forces in that country. (Massoud was assassinated by Taliban suicide bombers not too long after the interview). The author is a first class journalist with a particular talent for foreign reporting and comes highly recommended. PLANTING TIME HAS BEGUN!! SPRING IS HERE!! P ERENNIALS, ANNUALS AND VEGETABLES It feels like spring! Days are warmer and the garden is starting to come alive after its winter rest. We are loaded with lots of early spring primroses and pansies, so come in and treat yourself to some of these knockout colors to liven up borders and containers. If by chance you missed last fall's selection of spring-blooming bulbs, we also have a cheery assortment of crocus, daffodils, tulips, anemone and more, all potted up and in bloom and ready to enjoy (and add into your garden when their bloom is finished). Beware - slugs are beginning to frolic (do slugs frolic?) in these warmer days, and they love primroses too! Not to mention the tender new growth of those bulbs, lettuces and other plants that have been starting to appear. We recommend using 'Worry Free' granules to stop the damage from these garden pests (not harmful to pets and birds). And speaking of bulbs (and tubers and corms, oh my) turn your thoughts to summer and early autumn just long enough to come to the nursery and take advantage of our

Most of you have noticed that we have switched from packing in grocery bags to packing in wax boxes with liners. Our hope is to reuse the wax boxes for deliveries (please do not return the liners). We feel that this will help with quality and will increase efficiencies in packing and delivering our produce. Please make every effort to return our boxes. Each box costs us around $2. I have to buy about 500 at a time. 500 grocery bags only costs about $30. As you can see we have made a significant investment and returning our wax boxes will help us make this a wise investment. Thank you for returning our boxes. My boys have been excavating near an old stump on our property. They've been looking for treasures. The other day I noticed that the rhubarb was also excavated. They had forgot that the plants were there and there you have it. Dormant rhubarb plants can appear to be quite an interesting find. The silver lining is that I have two raised beds that I have not planted to cover crops and one of these became our new rhubarb bed, in which the boys so graciously helped me plant. I hope those old roots will survive. We'll find out in April. The cover crops are growing nicely. Things actually grow year-around. The trick is to plant those items in July and August to get them to the edible or almost edible size before November or to get a crop in the early spring. This takes planning but can be done. It is also important to plant vegetables that are frost hardy. There are two books that I would recommend for our climate if you have half a mind to give it a try. The first is

Making Portland the "Ruby Chard City": Eight Tips for Beginning Gardeners
by Paul Conrad / taken from Reflections , Spring 1996
If Ole and Maitri Ersson had their way, Portland might one day change its nickname from "The Rose City" to "The Ruby Chard City." Not that this Southeast Portland couple has anything against flowers. Their postage stamp-sized front yard bursts with color from the 15 or so varieties of flowers Maitri plants every spring. But every other available square inch of space on their 40-by-100-foot lot is devoted to growing food. Aside from staples such as grains and potatoes, Ole and Maitri are able to produce most of their food for their vegetarian family of five. Along with growing vegetables in the backyard, the Erssons harvest raspberries from the cane hedge bordering their property and have strawberry plants growing in their driveway. They have even grown pumpkins on the roof of their house in five-gallon pails. Ole and Maitri like to imagine what it would be like if every household in Portland produced at least a portion of its own vegetables. They envision a city where everyone on a block works together to grow food, sharing labor, know-how, equipment and harvests. They'd like to see neighborhood organics depots where leaves, wood chips and other valuable organic material could be stored and distributed to local gardeners for composting and mulching. They wish that the city's network of community gardens could be expanded to provide more gardening opportunities to apartment dwellers and others without their own land.

    Growing a Vegetable Garden
R.A. McNeilan If you want to print this publication, we recommend downloading the PDF version. Even in times of a water shortage, you can grow a vegetable garden if you use special water-efficient practices. You might also consider some of these practices if your area's water is normally in short supply or expensiveor both.
    Flat is best
For efficient water conservation, prepare a soil surface for maximum water penetration. This means planting in a flat surface instead of any combination of raised mounds, beds, or ditches. The "hill" referred to on a seed packet usually means a grouping of seeds rather than a raised area. A raised area, once it has dried, is very difficult to wet again. Water runs away from the root zone of the plant and is wasted.
    Using fertilizers
Managing soil tilth to include additional organic matter will promote water penetration and retention. Organic material can include plant residue from garden plants, leaves, straw, manure, sawdust, bark, etc. Apply these additions annually. Adequate fertility levels will help produce crops that require limited water. A fertilizer such as 5-10-10 at the rate of
