    The Hakluyt Society
The Hakluyt Society was founded in 1846 and named in honour of the greatest English editor of travel writings, Richard Hakluyt the younger, 1552-1616. The Society has for its object the advancement of education by the publication of scholarly editions of records of voyages, travels, and other geographic material of the past. Since it was founded the Society has published more than 300 volumes, about half of which have been editions of texts translated into English from other European languages. Each volume is placed in the charge of an editor especially competent in many cases from personal acquaintance with the countries described to give the reader such assistance needed for the elucidation of the text. In all cases where required for the better understanding of the text, the volumes are furnished with maps, portraits, and other illustrations, while the author's original plates or drawings are reproduced in facsimile.

    Redivivus
As these memos have frequently pointed out, it is paradoxical that in U.S. universities, geography departments were being abolished just at a time when they were needed most. At Stanford, that was one of the main reasons I quit the directorship of the Latin American program I had founded. Among the promotors of this mad administrative act were the economists, who scorned geography as descriptive.
Now economists are rediscovering geography, and geographers are annoyed; as though it were a great discovery, the new economists are promoting the study of industrial location. Ron Martin of Cambridge University Geography Department has expressed this annoyance in "The New Geographical Turn in Economics" (Cambridge Journal of Economics, January,1999). In fact, the specialty of Stanford´s Geography Department was industrial location. The spokesman for the new economics is Paul Krugman of MIT, author of Development, Geography and Economic Theory (MIT Press, 1995).
Reading Stanford proclamations, I am often amused by the great innovations which simply revived things we did many decades ago. I would not be surprised if soon the Stanford administration announced that the great Richard Hakluyt has been invited to start a geography department which will be of the cutting edge of that thrilling new discipline. Would it be tactless of me to remind the administration that Hakluyt (1552-1616) was a close friend of mine at Christ Church, Oxford?

The Thomas Merton Archives at St. Bonaventure University Books Left at St. Bonaventure When Merton Entered Religious Life Books Left at St. Bonaventure When Merton Entered Religious Life Compiled by Paul J. Spaeth These are books which Merton left at St. Bonaventure College, presumably with the director of the library at that time Fr. Irenaeus Herscher, just prior to his leaving the college and secular life to travel to Kentucky to enter the Trappist monastery at Gethsemani in December of 1941. There is little, or no marking in these books. In the few cases when there is something of a more substantial nature, it is noted with the entries. Many of the books would seem to have been purchased new, but even in these cases it is not always certain that the markings are from Merton. The most important markings are Merton’s ownership signatures along with the dates when he received them. The list is broken down into only a few categories which seemed to be the most appropriate.
