China in Maps - A Library Special Collection
The Map of China - ca.1625
30 x 37 cm
Samuel Purchas, 1575-1626 This rare and important early English map was a model for the de Bry and Semedo English maps. It was first published in Purchas his Pilgrimes, a collection of travel writings, based on the work of the famous geographer, Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616). Purchas records he originally based his map on Chinese one, captured by an English merchant in the port of Bantam (in what is now Indonesia). It is possible that this Chinese map was the 1593 "Cao Map", of which there is now only one recorded example. Squares and circles depict cities and settlements. The provinces of China are marked and boundaries shown, for perhaps the first time on a Western map. Note that Macau and Canton (Guangzhou) are both named. The vignettes in the corners depict Matteo Ricci and a Chinese couple.
Descriptio Chorographica Regni Chinae - ca.1628
29 x 34 cm
Theodor de Bry, 1528-1598 This hand colored map with a Chinese title, "Huang Ming yi tong fang yu bei lan", was published in de Bry's Petits Voyages, part XII, in 1628 (30 years after his death). It was copied from one that appeared in Samuel Purchas' collection of voyages Purchas his Pilgrimes published in London in 1625. Note the vignettes in the corners of the map that depict Matteo Ricci and a Chinese couple.

Back to FEATURES INDEX The Reconstruction of the Kathleen and May (Video) [November 02]
The Schooner Kathleen and May, formerly Lizzie May, was launched in 1900 at Connahs Quay, Flintshire, in Wales. She spent most of her sea faring life transporting coal to various ports around the country. Eventually, progress caught up with her and she spent many years in a maritime museum in London.
In 1998 she arrived in Bideford for a reconstruction. However, this turned out to be a bigger job than any-one imagined. This is the story of
how a small group of people rose to the
challenge to preserve that last remaining boat
of its kind.

Prospero's Hen
by Joseph L. Eldredge
The first time The Tempest was linked to the Vineyard and Cuttyhunk was in 1902 when Rev. Edward Everett Hale discovered similarities between phrases and word patterns in two journals kept on Bartholomew Gosnold’s 1602 voyage and certain lines in the Shakespeare drama. He described his findings in a talk to the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester. His interesting revelations seemed to create no waves. Twenty years later, Marshall Shepard, soon to be the first president of the new Dukes County Historical Society, came upon Hale’s findings. In a talk to the Daughters of the American Revolution in Edgartown, he outlined what he called the "Gosnold-Shakespeare Theory". His talk was mentioned in the Vineyard Gazette, where it was read by Edna Coffin of Edgartown, then a student at Radcliffe College. She wrote to Shepard requesting more information, stating that she hoped to write a paper on the subject. In his response, Shepard suggested, "It might be interesting to recall the relationship between the Gosnold and Bacon families, for if Shakespeare was in reality Bacon, no effort of the imagination is needed to picture Gosnold relating his New World experiences to his distinguished kinsman and author of The Tempest. It would be well to examine Dr. Hale’s discovery in the light of the evidence of the Baconian theory." Miss Coffin’s paper, "Martha’s Vineyard, the setting for Shakespeare’s Play, The Tempest" was praised by her professor as "touched with the wand of fancy; the possibilities are interesting - the probabilities strong." Emboldened, she sent a copy to Prof. George Lyman Kittredge of Harvard, the eminent Shakespearean authority, asking for his opinion. The learned professor responded: "A very good joke. I should imagine that it might be a piece of newspaper humor." The "joke" lay fallow until 1940 when Shepard, now president of the new Society, published

Hakluyt, Richard, c. 1552?1616, English geographer and historican, most famous forhis book Divers Voyages touching the Discovery of America, written in 1582.
http://www3.sympatico.ca/harrytm/dunnettnotes.html
ANNOTATIONS Readers of the Dunnett novels are faced with a wonderful cornucopia of medieval and Renaissance literature, mostly uttered by the fluent tongue of Francis Crawford of Lymond who "echoes like a mynah". "I wish to God you'd talk in prose, like normal people," Gideon Somerville says to him. Some of us wish that he came with footnotes and translations. Well, these are my footnotes and translations and references. Not all my doing, not by a log shot: credit where credit is due, most of it has been done by friends and acquaintances of Dunnett fandom, particularly the ingenious Carol Gleason. Many of us, as the years go by, have from time to time come across a quote, a name, a place or an idea that echoed in our heads because Lymond (or Dorothy Dunnett) mentioned it. On other occasions, Lymond will glibly make a quip in Latin, Persian, Arabic, Russian or Scots and we would pay good money for a handy translator - where is Sheemy Wurmit when you need him? Or historical information: what did happen to Ivan the Terrible in the end, anyway? (Hint: he died.)

The Cabots (1497-1509)
Hakluyt, Richard (1552?-1616). The Principal Navigations, Voiages, and Discoveries of the English Nation [...]. London: George Bishop and Ralph Newberie, 1589. The place and date of birth of Giovanni Caboto, more commonly known as John Cabot, are unknown. In 1476 he became a naturalized citizen of Venice, and in the mid-1490s he entered the service of England as an experienced navigator. In May 1497 Cabot left Bristol, England on a voyage of discovery commissioned by Henry VII. On June 24 he sighted land, went ashore and formally took possession of it. He then sailed along the coast for some 30 days without seeing a soul, and in early August returned to England, full of enthusiasm and convinced that he had reached Asia. In reality, Cabot had just become the first explorer after Columbus to have reached America. As for the exact place where he landed, historians lose themselves in conjectures, but agree in pointing to some place in North America: Labrador, Newfoundland, Cape Breton or perhaps even Prince Edward Island. In May 1498 John Cabot left Bristol on a second voyage of exploration from which he never returned. In the words of one of his contemporaries, "he found new lands only at the bottom of the Ocean."
