In Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections

The treasure room of the Library in Bryan Hall ca. 1939 Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections has a surprisingly large but generally unknown collection of early printed books. Most of the books selected for this exhibit were acquired prior to 1958. In the first 60 years of the Washington State College, a devoted group of collectors and the energetic members of the Friends of the Library amassed an impressive number of early imprints, including 55 incunables (books printed before 1501). Two donors from this period are especially important. In 1947, Colonel and Mrs. Axel H. Oxholm of Washington, D.C., gave the Libraries some 300 early imprints of classical authors. At his retirement, Carl Milton Brewester, Professor of Organic Chemistry at Washington State University between 1912-1950, left the Libraries over 5,000 early imprints in addition to donating original manuscripts and historical photographs. A tradition of giving rare books as memorial class gifts began at Washington State University with The Class of 1938, and continued until 1942. Even the Bookie, the on-campus student textbook store, used extra funds in the late 1930s to purchase rare books for the Libraries. This exhibit is therefore a celebration and an unveiling of a fraction of the early modern imprints assembled over the last century at Washington State University Libraries.

DOCUMENT NO. 11: THE INQUISITION: HERESY AND ORTHODOXY Source: Richard Hakluyt, Voyages Among the first European prisoners of the Inquisition in Spanish America were a number of English mariners who were set on the Mexican shore in the 1560s by Sir John Hawkins, at their own request, after Hawkins had escaped with two battered ships from a severe naval defeat at Spanish hands in the harbor of Veracruz. After a residence of some six years in the country, during which time they were fairly well treated by the colonists, the English- men were rounded up and brought to Mexico City to be tried for heresy by the inquisition. Miles Philips, one who lived to return to England and tell the tale, recorded his ordeal in a narrative first published by Richard Hakluyt (1552?-1616?) in his great documentary collection dealing with English voyages. Now after that six years were fully expired after our first coming into the Indies, in which time we had been imprisoned and served in the said countries as is before truly declared, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred seventy four, the Inquisition began to be established in the Indies very much against the minds of the Spaniards themselves. For never until this time since their first conquering and planting in the Indies, were they subject to that bloody and cruel Inquisition. The chief Inquisitor was named Don Pedro Moya de Contreras, and John de Bovilla his companion, and John Sanchez the fiscal, and Pedro de los Rios, the secretary. They being come and settled, and placed in a very fair house near unto the white friars, considering with themselves that they must make an entrance and beginning of that their most detestable Inquisition here in Mexico, to the terror of the whole country, thought it best to call us that were Englishmen first in question, and so much the rather, for that they had perfect knowledge and intelligence that many of us were become very rich, as has been already declared, and therefore we were a very good booty and prey to the Inquisitors.

THE JUNEAU EMPIRE For 10 days this month U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service historians and archeologists joined forces with Kake to investigate the possibility that British explorer Sir Francis Drake cruised in Southeast Alaska nearly 200 years before Capt. James Cook did so in 1778. The theory that Drake's ships came as far north as Wrangell and the nearby Stikine River in 1579 is being advanced by Canadian geographer Samuel Bawlf, founder of the British Columbia Heritage Trust, the provincial agency that handles archeology and history. In May, Bawlf published "Sir Francis Drake's Secret Voyage to Northwest America," a book outlining his theory. On June 14, as a conclusion to his expedition in Alaskan waters, Bawlf gave a talk at the Clausson Museum in Petersburg.
