Biography of Alexander Hamilton
Hamilton was decidedly undemocratic. He wished a "governor" for life, chosen by electors selected by electors, and to his elected king he wished to give an absolute veto upon all legislation. The senate he wished to compose of members chosen for life by electors, while, for the lower house of Congress, he would have had only freeholders vote. The state governments he would have wiped out, or have left wholly dependent upon the central government. In 1789 Hamilton entered Washington's cabinet as the first secretary of the treasury. His opinions on financial matters, on the public credit, methods of raising revenue, the mint, the bank, manufactures, etc., were law with the administration. Hamilton and Jefferson came into direct conflict. Hamilton left the cabinet in 1795. He advocated putting down the whiskey insurrection with a firm hand. He defended Jay's Treaty with Great Britain. He assisted Washington in composing his farewell address. Hamilton and Aaron Burr were not only bitter political enemies, but local rivals. Hamilton thwarted some of Burr's dearest plans. Burr, though vice-president of the United States, brought on a duel with his opponent at Weehawken, New Jersey, opposite the city of New York, in which Hamilton was mortally wounded. He died July 12, 1804. Hamilton's private life was far from right. He was imperious in his manners and had a degree of self-confidence that in any other man would be considered sheer egotism. He was one of the most brilliant and intellectual men ever connected with public affairs in this country. His writings were, for their day, marvelously ingenious and strongly formed pieces of argument. He possessed a genius for organization and administration such as belongs to few men. The faults of his private life, the quarrelsomeness of his disposition, and the manner of his death have prevented him from receiving the full degree of admiration and praise that is due.

Alexander Hamilton On the Adoption of the Constitution by Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804) Delivered June 24, 1788 Delivered at the New York convention called to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Gentlemen indulge too many unreasonable apprehensions of danger to the State governments; they seem to suppose that the moment you put men into a national council, they become corrupt and tyrannical and lose all their affection for their fellow citizens. But can we imagine that the Senators will ever be so insensible of their own advantage as to sacrifice the genuine interest of their constituents? The State governments are essentially necessary to the form and spirit of the general system. As long, therefore, as Congress has a full conviction of this necessity, they must even upon principles purely national, have as firm an attachment to the one as to the other. This conviction can never leave them, unless they become madmen. While the Constitution continues to be read and its principle known the States must by every rational man be considered as essential, component parts of the Union; and therefore the idea of sacrificing the former to the latter is wholly inadmissible. From the circumstances already explained and many others which might be mentioned, results a complicated, irresistible check, which must ever support the existence and importance of the State governments. The danger, if any exists, flows from an opposite source. The probable evil is that the general government will be too dependent on the State Legislatures, too much governed by their prejudices, and too obsequious to their humors; that the States, with every power in their hands, will make encroachments on the national authority till the Union is weakened and dissolved.

    YORKTOWN BIOGRAPHIES
Hamilton, Alexander. 1757-1804. Alexander Hamilton was born in the British West Indies, the son of a minor Scottish nobleman and a local woman. The early life of Hamilton was not easy. His father left him at an early age and then his mother died soon after. He became orphaned at the age of eleven. He was, however, able to secure a position as the apprentice of a local merchant. The merchant realized that Hamilton had potential as a merchant but lacked formal schooling. The merchant, with assistance from Hamilton's aunts, sent him to New York to go to school. Hamilton was an early supporter of the American cause. On March 14, 1776, the State of New York commissioned him a captain with authorization to raise a company of artillery for the defense of New York City. Hamilton successfully raised the company. The unit was transferred into the Continental army when the British threatened to attack. Hamilton and his company formed a part of Henry Knox's artillery regiment and fought in the battles around New York City. The company went on to fight at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. Hamilton was widely known throughout the army for his skill as a combat commander. His reputation as a commander, and his skill as a writer, gained him the position of George Washington's secretary and Aide-de-camp. It was at this time that Hamilton was also promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

    Alexander Hamilton - New York
A staunch debater in the convention which framed the federal constitution, and the chief advocate of that instrument after its completion, was Alexander Hamilton. He was a native of the Island of St. Croix, and was born in 1757. His father was the younger son of an English family, and his mother was an American who died while Hamilton was young. At the age of sixteen, wealthy benefactors sent him to New York where he entered a student of Columbia college. While a member of this institution the first buddings of his intellect gave presages of his future eminence. The contest with Great Britain called forth the first talents on each side, and his juvenile pen asserted the claims of the colonies against very respectable writers. His papers exhibited such evidence of intellect and wisdom, that they were ascribed to Mr. Jay, and when the truth was discovered, America saw with astonishment a lad of seventeen in the list of her able advocates. At the age of eighteen he entered the American army as an officer of artillery. The first sound of war awakened his martial spirit, and as a soldier he soon conciliated the regard of his brethren in arms. It was not long before he attracted the notice of Washington,
