This section emerged in between the Gothic Horror and Science Fiction sections and I initially thought to call it an Age of Transition. The period covered certainly saw many important inventions, including internal combustion engine, gramophone, cinema, radio and flight. It also includes the period of the First World War, and most of the writers, if not directly involved were certainly affected by that conflict. H(erbert) G(eorge) Wells

Clive Staples ("C.S.") Lewis
Author and Critic
Lewis was born in Dundela Avenue, Strandtown, Belfast and baptised in St Mark's, Dundela, by his grandfather, Thomas Hamilton, who was rector there. In 1905 the family moved to "Little Lea" on the Circular Road, which his father had built; it is the location of the wardrobe which plays such an important role in his children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia. The house however is privately owned and not accessible to the public. Lewis was educated in England, at Malvern College and University College, Oxford, his education being interrupted by military service during the First World War when he was wounded at the battle of Arras. On his return to university he graduated brilliantly and became Fellow and Tutor at Magdalen College (he later moved to Cambridge as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Literature). Perhaps his best-known academic book is The Allegory of Love (about medieval literature), but he reached a wider audience through works of Christian apology like The Screwtape Papers and radio broadcasts on the same subject. The Narnia stories, originally composed for World War Two evacuees, brought him great success - although his friend J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord Of The Rings, did not like them! In his later years he married the American Joy Gresham, who in 1960 died of cancer; his autobiography Surprised By Joy is partly inspired by her. The play and film Shadowlands tell a somewhat romanticised version of their story. Lewis died in 1963 and is buried at Holy Trinity Church, Haddington, Oxford.

In het leven van Lewis bestond geen scheiding tussen het christelijke en het alledaagse. „Zijn werk was degelijk en diepzinnig, als van een geleerde uit Oxford. Biographical Statement: 1963 Biography from More Junior Authors 1999 update: Clive Staples Lewis was a highly respected Anglican theologian and literary scholar, but he is probably best known as the author of the Chronicles of Narnia, a fantasy series for children. Despite its religious overtones and often adult themes, the series has received both high critical and popular acclaim and seems destined to be Lewis' most enduring body of work. Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland in November 1898. His father, Albert James Lewis, was a lawyer there; his mother, Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis, was the daughter of a naval chaplain. In his autobiography, Surprised by Joy, Dr. Lewis tells of his early years. His mother died when he was quite small, and his childhood and youth were spent in various boarding schools, all of which he detested. He spent a good deal of time in solitude, finding solace in books, especially fairy tales, myths, and other imaginative works. From 1914 to 1917 he was educated at home by a private tutor, W. T. Kirkpatrick, the former headmaster of Lurgan College. In 1917 he entered Oxford University, but enlisted soon after in the British Army. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and served in France, where he was wounded. He returned to Oxford, and later settled down as a don at Magdalen College.
