Thomas Harriot (1560-1621)
Nothing is known of Harriot's life up to the time when, at age seventeen, he matriculated at the University of Oxford. The record states that he was from the county of Oxford and that his father was a commoner. Harriot studied at St. Mary's Hall, took his degree in 1580, and went to London. Here he was employed by Sir Walter Ralegh and in 1585 went with the expedition to Virginia organized by Ralegh as cartographer and one versed in the theory of navigationin our terms, as staff scientist. Harriot returned in 1586 and wrote an account of Virginia and its natives, A Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia , published in 1588. In the meantime, Harriot had joined Ralegh in Ireland, which the English were colonizing at that time. Ralegh granted Harriot a former abbey, where Harriot lived for a few years. Back in London, Harriot came into contact with William Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, and in 1598 he left Ralegh and entered the service of Northumberland, who gave him a pension and living quarters (and later a separate house) at Syon House, just west of London. In 1605 Harriot was briefly imprisoned along with Northumberland as a result of the Gunpowder Plot. Harriot was quickly released but the earl remained in the Tower of London until 1622. Harriot lived at Syon for the rest of his life. In 1613 he developed an cancerous ulcer (on his nostril), which was the eventual cause of his death. Except for A Brief and True Report

H ISTORY OF THE R EPORT
Thomas Hariot: A Biographical Sketch Thomas Hariot (1560-1621) was the quintessential Renaissance man. A true polymath, he made significant advances in mathematics, science, astronomy and linguistics, and is considered one of the world's first ethnographers. His theory of the genesis of equations is considered the last great discovery in algebra. Hariot assisted poet George Chapman with his translation of the Iliad , helped Sir Walter Raleigh write his History , and maintained a lengthy correspondence with Kepler. He shares credit for the invention of the telescope (or "perspective trunke") with Galileo. Although the Report is the the only work Hariot published, his influence nonetheless strong in the intellectual circle that included Raleigh, Christopher Marlowe, George Chapman, and the ninth Earl of Northumberland. Hariot was born in St. Mary's Parish, Oxford, in 1560, and graduated A.B. from Oxford University in 1579. Little else is know of his early life. Soon after leaving the university he joined the household of Sir Walter Raleigh as a tutor in mathematics and science. At Raleigh's Durham House, Hariot instructed sea captains in navigational techniques. He trained Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe for their 1584 exploration voyage of the Virginia coast. When Amadas and Barlowe returned to England with two captured natives, Manteo and Wanchese, Hariot endeavored to learn the Algonkian language from them, and created a phonetic alphabet to record their speech.

Brothers, 1888 In March 1584 Queen Elizabeth of England granted Sir Walter Raleigh a territory of 200 leagues wherever he chose to settle in North America. Back in England a few months later, a reconnaissance expedition identified Virginia as a favourable place for realizing Raleigh's plans. A first attempt failed; from August 1585 to June 1586 a group of settlers stayed on Roanoke Island in Chesapeake Bay, but the hostility of the Indians of North America and lack of supplies forced the group to return to England. In May 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh sent a second expedition headed by one John White. The colonists settled on Roanoke Island, and a few weeks after his arrival John White returned to England in search of provisions. But he was unable to get back until 1590, and when he did, there was no longer anyone there. Among the settlers who stayed in Virginia from 1585 to 1586 was Thomas Hariot, a young man of 25 who had been hired as a surveyor and historiographer. The
