Mark Twain 's (1835-1910) humorous stories were popular not only because they were funny, but because they were stories about plain, everyday people like you and me. There are several other writers from this period you should remember. These writers belong to the local color group of American writers. The local color style of writing uses details from a particular area to add interest and authenticity to the story. This may include descriptions of place, dress, customs, music, and other things from the local area. A popular local color writer from this period, and even today, is Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908). He was a white Southern writer, but he popularized Black folklore. Folklore is a traditional story that is commonly told by word-of-mouth. Harris' most popular stories are the Uncle Remus tales ( Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings Nights with Uncle Remus , 1892, and Uncle Remus and His Friends , 1892), which contain the story of "Brer Rabbit." All Harris' stories are about animals, but they act like humans. Although Brer Rabbit is weaker than Brer Fox, he is smarter. A teacher by trade, Adams gained fame and fortune during his lifetime from the publication of numerous "boy adventure stories." John Townsend Trowbridge New York Beginning his career as a newspaper editor and anonymous contributor to various publications, Trowbridge first earned a name for himself upon publication of an anti-slavery novel. He wrote articles for the children's magazines Our Young Folks and Youth's Companion during and after the war. Of his Civil War novels, Cudjo's Cave was the most popular. According to the new introduction to a recent edition of the novel, Trowbridge was the first American novelist to depict a black man of pure African ancestry as noble and intelligent. Modern critics, however, label the character Pomp a stereotype. Joel Chandler Harris  (1848-1908) is famous for his  creation of Uncle Remus,  Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer  Bear and other characters as  in Uncle Remus, His Songs  and His Sayings (1880),  Nights with Uncle Remus  (1883), Uncle Remus and His  Friends (1892), The Tar Baby  (1904), Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit (1906);  edited Uncle Remus's Magazine (1907-08).  Other works included Mingo, and Other  Sketches in Black and White (1884), Free Joe and Other Georgia Sketches (1887), Gabriel  Tolliver (1902). Harris, who had grown up in Georgia during the Civil War, spent a lifetime compiling and  publishing the tales told to him by former slaves. These stories - many of which Harris learned  from an old black man he called "Uncle  George" - were first published as columns in  "The Atlanta Constitution" and were later  syndicated nationwide and published in book  form. Harris's Uncle Remus was a fictitious old slave and philosopher who told entertaining  fables about Br'er Rabbit and other woodland  creatures in a Southern black dialect.
