Education: Miami University
Occupation: lawyer
Political Affiliation: Republican
Religious Affiliation: Presbyterian
Summary of Religious Views:
At least from his college days onward, Harrison appears to have been quite devout. In addition to frequently attending church, Harrison became a church elder, and taught Sunday school.
Harrison's religious faith instilled in him a sense of duty which underlay his political activities.
Quotations:
"I hope you will renew your Christian faith and duties. It is a great comfort to trust God even if His providence is unfavorable. Prayer steadies one when he is walking in slippery places even if things asked for are not given." letter to Russell Harrison, 8 August 1887

Abstract:
President Harrison's speech-making tour in 1891 was, at that time, the longest journey ever undertaken by any President while in office. The 9,232 mile rail trip lasted one month and three days. The trip was partly planned and largely financed by the former Governor of California, Leland Stanford. The pioneer railroad builder had invite d the President to his ranch in Palo Alto to discuss a professorship at the newly built Stanford University and to participate in the dedication of that institution. Included in the Presidential party were First Lady Caroline Harrison, her secretary and niece Mrs. Dimmick, Russell B. Harrison and his wife, Mary McKee (the Harrison's daughter), Carter B. Harrsion and his wife, Postmaster General John Wanamaker, Secretary of Agriculture Jeremiah McClain Rusk, and Marshall Dan Ransdell.

Benjamin Harrison, 1833-1901
America's 23rd president Benjamin Harrison, grandson of president William Henry Harrison, served between the 2 terms of Grover Cleveland. Harrison had the distinctions of being the only grandson of a US president to become Chief Executive, the last Civil War general to serve as president, and was the shortest of America's presidents. Infamous in his day for his "billion dollar congress" Harrison died in 1901 at the age of 67. Born on August 20th, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was the son of farmer turned statesman John Scott Harrison, a US Senator, and his wife, Elizabeth Neal. Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the famed frontiersman whose own presidential campaign motto had been "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!" for his famed Tippecanoe exploits. Benjamin lived on his father's Ohio farm and was a quiet and studious youth, who was accepted at the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. While a student Harrison met the daughter of Dr. John Scott, the founder of the nearby Oxford Female Institute. Caroline Lavinia Scott, a fragile, outgoing female scholar charmed Harrison, and he proposed marriage soon after meeting the petite Ohioan (Harrison was himself barely 5'6" tall). The couple wed shortly after Harrison graduated college with honors, and by the time he completed 2 years of law and passed the Ohio bar had a son and daughter. Harrison moved his family to Indianapolis

Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), an American statesman, the twenty-third president of the United States, born in North Bend, Ohio, August 20, 1833. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, ninth president of the United States, and the great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1852 he graduated from Miami University and went to Cincinnati, where he studied law. Two years later he removed to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he built up a large law practice and resided whenever not on duty in Washington. Harrison entered the Union army in 1862 as lieutenant, and shortly afterward was appointed colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteers, which he organized. He fought bravely in the Atlanta campaign and about Nashville, and at the close of the war left the military with the rank of brevet brigadier-general. Harrison returned to Indianapolis and resumed the practice of law, but became a professor of international law at Leland Stanford Junior University. He was counsel for Venezuela before the arbitration tribunal in 1899 and chief representative of the United States at the Hague Peace Conference. He died March 13, 1901.
